Year 9 Textiles Project – Creative Tote Bags

This term our Year 9 students get a taste of what D&T at GCSE would be like. Over the course of the term, they will have 6 lessons in each pathway f D&T and Computing. Within textiles, our Year 9 students have been working on an exciting textiles project that combines design, creativity, and practical making skills.

The project begins with students designing and producing their own printing blocks based on the Memphis design movement, experimenting with shapes, patterns, and scale. They then use these blocks to hand-print their fabric, creating bold and original surface designs. Once their fabric panels are complete, students will enhance their work further with stitched appliqué details, adding more colour, texture and individuality to their designs.

In the final two lessons, the printed and decorated fabric gets carefully sewn into a tote bag. This allows students to develop their machine sewing and construction skills while producing something they can take home and use.

Here are a few photos from our first round of students. Well done Year 9.
