House Debate

The skill of debating is an ancient art form, with its roots in Ancient Greek society. Here at Bushey Meads School, we are determined to give debating a high profile, and so, in association with the Debating Society, the Heads of House held a competition to determine the best rhetorical speakers in the school.

Let it not be said that the students who took part in the competition had an easy ride! With challenging motions and combative speakers, each competitor proudly displayed their persuasive skills throughout the grueling quarter-final and semi-final rounds.
Eventually, the final took place with Elm and Sycamore neck-a-neck for much of the debate. Difficult questions were posed to each of the houses, but in the end, it was Elm who triumphed. Congratulations!
The Heads of House would like to thank the final judges, our Executive Principal, Mr. Turner and Head of Humanities, Mr. Newbold who listened so intently to the arguments put forward. In addition, we would like to express our gratitude to Miss Victoria Woolmer of 12 Beech who co-judged with Mr. Newbold during the knock-out rounds and a final thank-you to the Chair, Mr. Leon Hirsh, also of 12 Beech, who managed each debate with dignified aplomb.
