Our Year 12 Photography students have been exploring the fascinating work of contemporary photographer Cindy Sherman, whose photographs often challenge ideas around identity, character and representation.
Taking inspiration from Sherman’s use of alter egos and carefully constructed characters, students were set the challenge of creating their own photographic identities. The class showed fantastic levels of enthusiasm and creativity, taking real ownership of the project and developing their ideas independently.
Many students went above and beyond to bring their characters to life, using face paint, costumes and carefully selected items of clothing and props to create distinctive alter egos. Students worked collaboratively in groups, supporting one another with styling, posing, photography and creative decision-making. The result was a fantastic collection of imaginative and engaging photographs.
It was particularly impressive to see how proactively students embraced the brief, experimenting with their ideas and confidently stepping outside of their comfort zones. Their willingness to collaborate and contribute to one another’s shoots resulted in some truly creative outcomes.
Over the next few lessons, students will begin editing their photographs, taking further inspiration from Cindy Sherman’s distinctive photographic style. We are looking forward to seeing how they transform their images and develop their characters even further through the editing process!
