Our new cohort of GCSE Art students has made a flying start to the academic year, diving headfirst into their foundational project, “Identity.” Over the past few weeks, the art studios have been a hub of focused energy, ambition, and creative exploration as students investigate what it means to convey personal and thematic identity through visual media.
To lay the groundwork for their individual journeys, the class began by analysing the intricate techniques of two distinctive contemporary artists: Dan Hillier and Iain MacArthur. Hillier’s surreal, Victorian inspired engravings and atmospheric ink work encouraged students to think deeply about symbolism and narrative. Meanwhile, MacArthur’s complex, pattern heavy portraiture inspired them to combine realistic facial features with bold, organic motifs. By dissecting these contrasting approaches, students have rapidly refined their technical skills in detailed, tonal drawing, learning how to build rich contrast and texture using fine liners, graphite, and ink.
Beyond pure drawing, the group has fully embraced hands on media experimentation to push their concepts further. They have worked on integrating MacArthur style geometric and floral design into anatomical forms, while also diving into monoprinting to create painterly, expressive textures and layered background imagery. A major focus of the project has also been learning how to curate and arrange sketchbook spreads so that the creative thought process flows seamlessly from initial artist research to dynamic, practical trials.
What has impressed the Art Department most is not just the impressive visual output, but the sheer enthusiasm and dedication shown by every single student. From arriving early to fine tune a drawing to taking extra care with page layouts, the group has set an exceptionally high standard for themselves. They are managing to strike a fantastic balance in their sketchbooks, taking immense pride in clean, professional presentation while remaining fearlessly inventive and original in their ideas.
We are immensely proud of how quickly our new GCSE artists have adapted to the demands of the course. If these opening weeks are anything to go by, we are in for an extraordinary exhibition of work at the end of the year.
