FOOTBALL

Result : Won 2-1

Scorers :  N. Konopka, L. Bird

Squad: N. Walters, S. Ardeleanu, J. Hiett, F. Fowler, H. Wills, J. Cunningham, L. Bird, K. Gibson, N. Konopka, H. Neal, Z. Zeb, H. McManus, L. Avci.

Comment : On Friday we visited Ashlyns School in Berkhamsted for the semi final of the county plate competition. Going into this game, we had only played one other game on the way to the semi final and we came across a strong Ashlyns team. It wasn’t a day for attractive football today as rain had been pouring all day long, we managed to play in the only period of the day where the sun came out. In the early stages it was a cagey affair with both teams struggling to play football on an extremely boggy pitch. The ball would roll and get stuck under people’s feet regularly. In the first half, we managed to take the game to Ashlyns and created a huge number of chances without scoring until we got a corner towards the latter end of the half and N. Konopka managed to head the ball home from a S. Ardeleanu delivery. 1 – 0. Shortly after this, N. Walters broke down the right hand side of the pitch past 4 players on the way and moved his way into the box. When in the box, he got his head up and found L. Bird who was waiting in the middle of the goal for a simple tap in, 2 – 0 to BMS. Almost immediately after, the boys lost their concentration briefly and from a simple throw in, Ashlyns were in 1 v 1 against J. Hiett where they calmly slot home their only goal of the game. 2 – 1 to BMS. At half time, we discussed how we worked hard, we were winning the first and second ball in midfield and despite the poor conditions we played some nice football. Onto the second half and it was a solid defensive effort from all involved, K. Gibson & L. Bird made some excellent tackles to hold some of their strong strikers. Some vital clearances from S. Ardeleanu & N. Konopka allowed us breathing space as pressure piled on. Finally, late in the game another temporary lack of concentration and people out of position, Ashlyns were through on goal, as their striker went past two defenders he was left with only J. Hiett to beat who had come rushing out to close the space. The striker shot and J. Hiett made an excellent save with his feet late on to secure us the win. An excellent team performance in very difficult conditions. Well done to all involved and one more game left this season.

Year 9A Boys v Levensthorpe (County PLATE Semi-Final) AWAY  Mr Cartledge

Date : Friday 17th March 2023

Result : Lost 6-2

Scorers :  R Totesaut-Christou, E Ansa-Otu

Squad: J Gladdy, Z Watson, D Mahmud, E Ansa-Otu, L Fearnside, J Allan, G Guainiere, A Worth, S Mowle, M Wong, R Totesaut-Christou, Z Bertie, K Fung

Commended performances : D Mahmud

Comment : The Year 9 Boys run in the County PLATE competition came to an end on a very heavy pitch at the furthest school away in the county. The game was lost in the first half with some sloppy goals conceded to leave the boys struggling to get back in the game. In the second half the boys created a number of chances converting two but this was not enough and the team went out at the semi-final stage. It has been a really promising season for the team reaching the League Final and County Plate semi and the boys can now look forward with confidence to next season.

BASKETBALL

Year 7 Boys v Croxley Danes (District League) AWAY     Mr Burnell

Date : Monday 20th March 2023

Result : Won 21-4

Scorers : R. Doran, F. Gee, D. Snowden, M. Golon-Matthews.

Squad: R. Doran, B. Spencer, D. Snowden, E. Pinto, R. Payne, K. Walker, J. Andrews, S. McGrath, M. Golon-Matthews, F. Gee.

Comment: Monday saw the year 7 Basketball team play against a good Croxley Danes side. The team started the game well as they took an early lead, which helped settle down any nerves. The team added to the score soon after and took an 8 point lead into the second quarter. Similar to the first quarter the side scored early again to extend their lead. However, as the quarter went on Croxley Danes grew into the game and created some excellent chances to reduce the gap. Fortunately for us we defended and rebounded well which stopped them from scoring. The third quarter was a scrappy one as both teams looked to score. However, the team were able to create the best chances and extend their overall lead. The final quarter was the best quarter of basketball that the team has played. The passing, shooting teamwork and decision making were all excellent which led to them extending their lead even further to win the game. An excellent game for the team and plenty to take into their next one.

Year 8 Inter house Basketball     Mr Harris

Date: Tuesday 21st March 2023

Result: 1st – Ash/Sycamore, 2nd – Oak, 3rd – Beech/Maple, 4th – Elm

Comment: Tuesday after school saw the return of Inter house basketball. This year was as competitive as ever. Due to a last minute change, there were not as many there as previous year but the same spirit was there from all. A highly competitive tournament saw Ash/Sycamore come out as the overall winners on the day after winning all their games. The final game saw a tight game between Ash/Sycamore vs Oak where the winners went on to win. In the final few minutes of the game, Ash/Sycamore managed to get the winning basket where Oak just didn’t have enough time to get another after their quick and strong start. Thank you for the two sports leaders that came down to officiate the games today, which allowed the event to run and all students to have a positive experience. Every game that was played was in a good, inclusive spirit and encouraging manner, as some had never played competitive basketball before. Well done to all, onto the summer term for another inter house event soon.

Result : Won 5. Drew-1 Lost-3

Squad: J.Isles, M.Huryta, S.Verrey, A.Permetia, M.Perkins-Faulkner, E.Yeboah, Y.Khan, S.Alcendor, E.Hanbury

Assistant coaches: E.Rogers, J.Verrey

Commended performances : Great effort and excellent play by all players.

Comment :The girls began really strong with three clear wins to Immanuel B, Westfield and St Michaels B. There were some strong shots by M.Huryta and J Isles. In the next game we faced some strong opposition from the Grange and we unfortunately lost by 3 goals. A closer game against Croxley Danes followed with some lovely interceptions and accurate passing down the court. This resulted in a draw. We lost against St Margarets, Immanuel A and secured a win in our final game against Reach Free. As the tournament progressed the improvements in all players was evident and most importantly the girls enjoyed the evening and were a credit to our school. A special thanks to E Rogers and J.Verry for their help with organising the team and kit. Finally a big thanks to Mrs Cooper for all her coaching and support  for the team.

2022-2023 A Great Netball Season.

This season BMS have played over 40 netball fixtures across 5 age ranges and entered 4 district tournaments. Regular Monday and Tuesday training sessions have taken place with many students attending and being rewarded on a weekly basis. A trip to see Super League Netball has also provided an inspirational opportunity for the girls. Students in years 10 and 11 have supported after school practice sessions and matches and several girls have run weekly sessions at Hartsbourne Primary School. We would like to thank all the girls who have played and trained, this season, for their hard work and commitment. Netball takes a break in the Summer term but we look forward to welcoming back old and new faces in September for next season’s play. Great job ladies! –  SJC and DMC
