Cyber Security Awareness Month!

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and this year’s message is simple: “Don’t Make It Easy for Them.”

For parents and teachers who are comfortable with technology, it can be easy to assume that cybersecurity is something we already have covered. But being confident with technology does not necessarily mean we are protected from cyber threats.

Our homes and classrooms are full of connected devices, online accounts, apps and platforms. The more connected we become, the more important it is to develop good digital habits.

Cybersecurity does not have to be complicated. A few simple steps can make a big difference.

Keep yourself and your family secure

  • Use strong, unique passwords for important accounts. A password manager can make this much easier.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever it is available, particularly for email, banking and school accounts.
  • Keep devices and apps updated. Those update notifications may be annoying, but they often contain important security fixes.
  • Think before you click. Be cautious with unexpected emails, messages, links and attachments, even when they appear to come from someone you know.
  • Talk to children about online safety. Help them understand what personal information should stay private and what to do if something makes them uncomfortable.

The aim is not to become a cybersecurity expert. It is to build small habits that make it harder for cybercriminals to succeed.

This Cyber Security Awareness Month, take a few minutes to check your digital habits. A little awareness today could prevent a much bigger problem tomorrow.

Don’t make it easy for them.
