Black History Month at BMS
The theme for this year’s Black History Month is Standing Firm in Power and Pride and is a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe.
This year, the theme was powerfully highlighted in our main school assemblies throughout the week and highlighted the profound contributions made by Black people as leaders, activists and pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.
Assistant Headteacher Ms Silla spoke passionately about the Theme of the Week and reflected some powerful student voice quotes that really made us all think deeply. The two core values of power and pride shone through what she said and reminded us that we all have power to influence, lead and effect positive change.
She also reminded us that we all should be proud of our cultural identity, heritage, and should celebrate everything of Black excellence – from the art and music to the stories passed through generations, pride is the heartbeat of Black communities worldwide.
She encouraged us to know where we come from, embracing our history, and walking boldly into the future without compromise or apology.
It was a great assembly and reminded us of the richness of our community here at Bushey Meads.
