Celebrating Charles Dickens

To complement our monthly Dickens’ Novel of the Month articles, the BMS English Faculty will be celebrating Charles Dickens next week! The 7th of February marks the birth date of the novelist himself. All KS3 and KS4 students will have an exciting opportunity to participate in special ‘Dickens’ themed lessons. They will be exploring the writer, his ghostly works and have the chance to write their very own ghost story. Not only that but the best ones will receive an R3 and be published in the BMS Newsletter!

In the meantime, why not check out a few useful links online:

Top 10 Interesting Facts About Charles Dickens | Guide London

Here you will find access to a range of different material in honour of Dickens. The ‘Charles Dickens Info’ website has games and activities that children and adults can join in with. If you are looking for some sightseeing opportunities this half term then the Dickens Museum in London is also a great place for learning about the writer. The museum is home to a small Curiosity Shop which also has online options to purchase Dickens’ themed items and some nice artistic and clothbound editions of his books.

For our A level students or older readers why not check out The British Library website. https://www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/articles/dickens-the-performer They have some articles dedicated to many aspects of Charles Dickens and ‘The Romantics and Victorians’. The link takes you to an interesting video with Simon Callow discussing Charles Dickens performances!

On behalf of the English Faculty, we hope you enjoy celebrating Charles Dickens next week. Stay tuned for our selection of stories from budding BMS writers in a future newsletter!
