E-Scooters on Santa’s Wish List?

I hope I am not jumping the gun by talking about Christmas lists. I haven’t put my decorations up yet, but I have them out of the loft and ready to go.

I have noticed that many of the local shops have E-Scooters prominently displayed and I am sure there have been more than a few requests to find them under the Christmas tree.

Students won’t be allowed to have them on site, nor will they be allowed to store them in our bike shed and we have had the following communication from Herts Police to clarify the legality of E scooters outside of school. Please see below.

Dear Parents,

In the build up to Christmas we are receiving questions from concerned parents regarding the law and safety of using e-scooters.

It is against the law to ride an e-scooter on the pavement or on a public road. The reason being is that e-scooters are classified as ‘personal light electric vehicles’ (PLEV’s) and as such are treated in the same way as motor vehicles requiring a driving licence and insurance. However, the law does not restrict retailers from selling them.

We have seen an increased use of e-scooters and police do have the power to seize e-scooters if they are seen being used on a public road or path.

We have also seen an increase in accidents involving e-scooters which have resulted in injury of e scooter users and other members of the public.

Hertfordshire Police urge you to take into consideration the law and safety element of buying your children e-scooters this Christmas.

Regards,

Bushey and Radlett Safer Neighbourhood Team.
