FOOTBALL

Year 9A Boys v Monks Walk (County Plate Quarter-Final) AWAY  Mr Cartledge

Date : Tuesday 24th January 2023

Result : Won 2-1

Scorers :  D Mahmud, J Gladdy

Squad: J Gladdy, Z Watson, D Mahmud, E Ansa-Otu, L Fearnside, J Allan, G Guainiere, A Worth, S Mowle, M Wong, R Totesaut-Christou, B Okeke, Z Bertie, K Fung

Commended performances : Whole team with special mention to D Mahmud

Comment : The Year 9 Boys produced their best ever team performance since arriving in the school with a well deserved 2-1 victory over Monks Walk in a really closely contested County Plate Quarter-Final. Despite going behind to an early goal the boys embraced the opportunity to play on a 4g pitch and played some excellent passing football to control the game for long periods. A fantastic free-kick from D Mahmud, who was outstanding throughout, brought the scores level just before half time. The boys created several chances in the second half and with just a few minutes left of normal time J Gladdy scrambled the ball home after a corner to give the boys a great victory. Well done to all the team who showed great spirit and togetherness throughout.

Year 8A Boys v Monks Walk (County Plate) HOME  Mr Harris

Date : Friday 20th January 2023

Result : Won 6 – 0

Scorers :  N. Walters x3, F. Fowler, N. Konopka,

Squad: J. Hiett (GK), Z. Zeb, R. Cooper, S. Ardeleanu, K. Gibson, L. Avci, H. Neal, H. McManus, N. Walters, F. Fowler, L. Bird, H. Wills, N. Konopka, J. Cunningham

Commended performances : N. Walters

Comment : On Friday, the Year 8 football team returned to action with an away trip to Monks Walk School. A long awaited game due to ongoing poor weather finally got played on the astroturf at Monks Walk. Straight away we made a strong start on a cold Friday afternoon, creating a number of chances early on in the game. Around 5 minutes into the game, we made the breakthrough with our first goal of the day as N. Konopka got his head onto an excellent H. Neal cross into the penalty area, making it 1 – 0. Shortly after this we doubled the scoring through a powerful run by N. Walters and slotting it into the goal. We missed a handful of good chances in the first half but managed to come into half time at 4 – 0. In the second half we continued our dominant performance and limited Monks Walk to a small handful of chances in the game J. Hiett a spectator at times in the game. We were extremely unlucky in this game as K. Gibson hit the post twice and crossbar once, it clearly wasn’t his day to score. Overall, a strong team performance by all involved, into the quarter finals we go and another game on the horizon. Well done to all, after a long hiatus without a game!

Year 9 Boys v St Michaels  (District League)  AWAY  Mr Cartledge

Date : Thursday 19th January 2023

Result : Lost 36-12

Scorers : E Ansa-Otu 6, M Wong 2, S Patel 2, D Mahmud

Squad : J Gladdy, S Patel, J Coady, D Mahmud, M Wong, E Ansa-Otu, K Arikat, G Guainiere, B Okeke

Comment: This was a real step up from the last game with St Michaels proving a very tough opponent. A really strong first quarter from St Michaels saw the boys trailing 16-0 but improvements were made in both offence and defence in the second half. The boys played some of their best basketball in the final quarter and with improved shooting can look forward with confidence to the next match.

Y10 Boys v Parmiters (District League)  HOME  Mr Burnell

Date : Wednesday 18th January 2023

Result : Lost 18 – 28

Scorers : T. Sookhoo, O. Spencer.

Squad : S. Fard, S. Milbery, T. Sookhoo, O. Spencer, K. Ford, C. Keough, K. Gurney, G. Eldridge, S. Harris, M. Kabucho.

Commended performances : T. Sookhoo, O. Spencer.

Comment: Wednesday saw the year 10 basketball team play their first ever fixture in the top league against a strong Parmiters side. The team started well and created some good opportunities to score the opening basket. However, they were unable to make any of the chances count and Parmiters scored first. The team reacted really well and levelled the scoring up soon after. The second quarter was very similar to the first as the team again created a lot of chances but could not put the ball in the basket. The third quarter was very evenly matched as both teams played some excellent basketball. The scores were very close going into the fourth and final quarter. Unfortunately for the team Parmiter managed to take more of their chances then we did and won the game. Overall a very good start to the season for the team with plenty to work on before the next game.

GCSE PE Practical Moderation – HOME   Mrs Cooper/Mr Harris

Tuesday 24th January

As part of the preparation for the GCSE students practical exams Tuesday saw us host Immanuel College for a badminton and table-tennis moderation with both our year 10 and 11 students.

In GCSE PE students are required to be assessed in 3 sporting activities with a practical assessment observed by an exam board moderator in the Spring of year 11.

Opportunities such as these provide valuable experiences for the students to play competitively against peers in other schools, something they have to do for their final moderation, making up 30% of their overall grade.  Video evidence for some exam boards is required and evenings like these enable this to be gathered.  In addition they allow discussion between staff across the schools as to how and what grades they are likely to award to individuals enabling for a fair and robust standardisation process. Tuesday was a valuable insight for the staff to take part in this process but also for the BMS students to compare their performances against those from another school. It highlights where they are placed in relation to the mark schemes and other performers.

Students from both schools played consistently well in both badminton and table-tennis and there were high performance levels evident in both activities. These are not the final assessments students will undertake but it certainly helped to highlight the need for continual practice in the weeks coming up to the exams.

Well done to all the students who took part.

DISTRICT SWIM GALA

WEDNESDAY 25TH JANUARY

Mrs Cooper and Mr Mitman

Venue: Haberdashers Boys School

Squad: P.Kovar, P.Tapri, A.Samnami, A.Pointer, P.Sorteriou, F.Masterson, A.Lankshear

Comment: It was a real privilege to accompany the BMS swim squad to the District Gala last week.

Students who swim for clubs were invited to join the team to compete for the school in this annual event.

Students in years 7 and 8 represent the junior teams, 9 and 10 in the intermediate and 11,12,13 in the seniors.

We were pleased to be able to take a spread of students across the age categories.

The standard of swimming was extremely high with students racing against county and regional swimmers in some cases.  However this didn’t deter the BMS swimmers who managed to get a hatful of personal bests, in which for some was the first time they had swum in a gala of this format.  Students are able to swim in the 25m Individual Medley and 2 other events, with only 1 representative in each event from each school.  With all the events taking place within a 2 hour time frame it really was a tough schedule for the swimmers.

Top podium performances came from P.Tapre in the Inter girls 50m backstroke -3rd place and also in 3rd place P.Kovar in the senior boys 50m Freestyle, with both swimmers at the top of their age categories it looks really promising for more podium places at next years event.

ALL of the swimmers should be really proud of their efforts and it was great to have them representing the school.

Results are below:

Student Event 1 Event 2 Event 3
P.Kovar 50m Freestyle – 3rd 50m Butterfly – 4th
P.Tapre 25m IM – 6th 50m Backstroke – 3rd 50m Butterfly – 4th
A.Samnami 50m Backstroke – 5th
A.Pointer 25m IM – 7th 50m Backstroke – 4th 50m Breaststroke -4th
P.Soteriou 25m IM – 6th 50m Backstroke – 5th 50m Freestyle – 4th
F.Masterson 50m Breaststroke – 4th 25m Butterfly – 5th
A.Lankshear 50m Freestyle – 7th
