Year 10 Design and Technology students have been hard at work in the workshops, developing a diverse range of practical skills to create their latest functional pieces; a choice of either a bespoke picture frame or a mirror complete with a custom acrylic stand.
The projects began with foundational woodwork, where students mastered traditional hand tool techniques by measuring, cutting, and shaping timber to produce a precise halving joint using tenon saws, chisels, and mallets. Once the wooden frames were assembled, students honed their attention to detail through essential surface preparation, applying wood filler and thorough sanding to achieve a smooth, professional finish.
Bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing, students then transitioned to computer aided design (CAD). They designed and operated the laser cutter to engrave intricate patterns of their own choice directly onto their wooden frames, adding a personalized flair to each product.
To elevate the final aesthetic, students applied various finishing techniques including; staining, varnishing, and oiling, which successfully accentuated the natural grain of the wood and ensured a durable, high-quality finish. Expanding their material processing capabilities further, students also utilised line bending equipment to heat and shape acrylic, forming custom stands to support their finished frames.
The resulting collection brilliantly highlights the students’ dedication, precision, and growing expertise across both traditional making and modern manufacturing technologies. Well done to all Year 10 students involved!
