Vape Awareness Week – Promoting Health and Safety Among Our Students

Next week we will be holding a Vape Awareness Week as part of our ongoing commitment to promoting the health and wellbeing of our students.

As you may be aware, the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices has risen significantly among teenagers in recent years. While often marketed as a “safer” alternative to smoking, vaping carries its own serious health risks – especially for young people.

The Dangers of Vaping for Teenagers

Nicotine, commonly found in vape products, is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. In addition, many vaping products contain harmful chemicals, some of which can cause long-term damage to the lungs and other organs.

Recent studies have shown a strong link between teenage vaping and an increased likelihood of later taking up tobacco smoking, exposing young people to even greater health risks.

Key Statistics

  • According to NHS Digital (2023), 9% of 11-15 year olds in England reported current e-cigarette use, up from 6% in 2018.
  • The ASH Youth Survey (2023) found that 20.5% of 11-17 year olds had tried vaping, a significant rise compared to previous years.
  • Disposable vapes are particularly popular, with 69% of current teen vapers reporting their use (ASH, 2023).

These numbers are concerning and highlight the importance of early education and open dialogue about the dangers of vaping.

What We’re Doing

During Vape Awareness Week, students will take part in age-appropriate workshops, assemblies, and discussions designed to:

  • Debunk myths and misinformation about vaping
  • Understand the health risks associated with nicotine use
  • Learn how to resist peer pressure
  • Access tools and resources to help themselves or others quit

We encourage you to talk to your child about what they learn and to keep the conversation going at home.

Support and Guidance

If you or your child would like more information or support, the following organisations offer excellent resources:

We believe that with the right education and support, our students can make informed, healthy decisions about their wellbeing. Thank you, as always, for your support.
