PE CONCEPT of the Week: Effort (HEART) Mr Harris

The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition, we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT.

Effort is key to progress in sport, whether pushing yourself to improve or supporting teammates to succeed together. In Year 7 Healthy Lifestyles, students have shown fantastic determination by giving their all in fitness drills, staying engaged, and encouraging each other to keep going. In basketball, effort is not just about individual skill but also about teamwork—tracking back in defence, making space for teammates, and never giving up on a play. The Year 7 football team demonstrated this brilliantly in their County Cup match against Kings Langley, working tirelessly for each other, showing resilience under pressure, and battling to the final whistle. Putting in consistent effort builds resilience, strengthens teamwork, and leads to long-term success.

HERTS COUNTY CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last Saturday February 1st saw the annual Hertfordshire County Cross-Country Championships take place at Westminster Lodge, St Albans. A very difficult and muddy course featuring a number of tough hills made for a real challenge for all the athletes. V Olas (Year 7) had qualified for the Pre Junior Girls race and F Francos (Year 9) the Junior Boys race following their performances in the District Cross-Country Championships. Both put in fantastic performances with V Olas finishing 17th in a field of 63 runners and F Francos 48th in a field of 92 runners. The standard was very high with all the top student athletes from Hertfordshire taking part and both should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Comment: The Senior Boys teams confirmed their place in the Division 1 League Final with a well deserved victory over Reach Free. Year 8A Boys v Futures Academy (District Division 1) HOME  Mr Cartledge

Date : Tuesday 4th February 2025

Result : Lost 6-3

Scorers : E Rumney, N Gibson, O Phillips

Squad : O Woodbrock (GK), O Phillips (Capt), N Gibson, C Allan, G Fogden, D Isles, T Colby, Z Butler, D Henry, R Samin, A Cohen, J Magkafourakis, E Rumney

Commended performances : C Allan

Comment :A disappointing result for the Year 8 boys in a match where we created lots of chances but failed to take them. A clinical Futures team scored some good goals to go into a big half -time lead. Despite a late fightback from the boys, the team went down to their first league defeat of the season. Despite this setback the boys are still in a very good position to make the League Final.

BASKETBALL

Year 10 Boys v QUEENS  (District League) HOME  Mr Harris

Date: Monday 3rd February 2025

Result: Won 40 – 22

Scorers : H. Hayward (6), H. McManus (2), N. Konopka (4), Y. Goyal (4), A. Yu (20), Z. O’Hara (4).

Squad: H. Hayward, N. Konopka, J. Cunningham, A. Yu, Y. Goyal, Z. O’Hara, K. Banfield, K. Gibson, H. McManus.

Comment: On Monday we faced off against Queens B in basketball.  we haven’t played in a while so this was an opportunity for the boys to stretch their legs again and challenge themselves against a strong opponent in Queens. The game started quickly we created a lot of space and very quickly racked up some points scoring our layups on the first break from our rebounds.  we also defended well in this course and in and around our basket we were dominant. As of course progressed and the game progressed we continued to dominate. We came into halftime and we were up having scored 24 points.  moving into the third quarter we slowed down a little bit became a little bit complacent and ended up conceding a lot of points however still managed to keep our lead. Moving into the final quarter we held off a strong fightback from Queens. We had to grin and bear some gruelling persistence with their attacking. However, a strong display of defensive work and discipline allowed us to come away as the winner. Well done all and onto our next game.

NETBALL

Year 10 Girls v St Clement Danes  (District League) AWAY  Mrs Cartledge

Date: Tuesday 4th February 2025

Result: Lost 13-3

Squad: E Mullings, N Eduirisuriya.A Gibson, M Rumney, R Chudasma, A Permeti, E Yeboah

Comment: The girls started well with some impressive interceptions and great movement down the court. At the end of the first quarter it was 1-1. The team agreed that they needed to slow down as it was quite slippy. Their passing improved in the second quarter as less interceptions were made by St Clement Danes Unfortunately during the second half the opposition shooters were very accurate and they increased their lead by 10. A special mention goes to A. Permeti and E Yeboah who agreed to play at the last minute and who played exceptionally well

Commended Performance: E. Mullings for great attacking play.

Year 11 Girls v St Clement Danes  (District League) AWAY  Mrs Cartledge

Date: Tuesday 4th February 2025

Result: Won 17-4

Squad: S Doran, M Bazile, L Qarib, V Hill. E  Bird, L Winslett M Baines.

Comment: This was a great performance by all players. By the first quarter the girls  went ahead by 5 goals. Accurate passing, well timed interceptions and very strong shooting enabled Bushey Meads to dominate play and by the third quarter we were ahead by 14 girls. In the last quarter the girls all changed positions but still managed to score another 2 goals.

I would like to thank all the year 11 netball players for their hard work, commitment and resilience over the five years. They have all been a credit to the school and their progress in netball has been wonderful to watch. Thanks girls and keep playing netball!

Commended Performance: S Doran for excellent shooting and movement in the circle
