Year 8 textiles students recently embarked on a delicious project – designing and creating unique cushions inspired by the theme of food! Students were given the brief to design and make these cushions to help educate children about different foods.

They honed their design skills by creating paper patterns to accurately cut out their cushion shapes. Many students incorporated vibrant applique techniques, meticulously cutting and sewing decorative food shapes onto their cushions. Intricate details, such as stitching on faces and expressions and adding texture to their foods, were created using a range of hand embroidery stitches. Students practiced their sewing machine skills, carefully stitching together their cushion covers with precision and neatness. Some students have gone the extra mile, making their cushions into mini food masterpieces by producing 3-dimensional products!

The resulting cushions were a feast for the eyes! From playful pizzas to elegant cupcakes, and funny food characters each student showcased their creativity and developed valuable sewing and design skills. This project also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving as students navigated the challenges of bringing their food-inspired visions to reality and I have been impressed by the way students have supported each other along the way. Well done Year 8!
