Superb Start to Tuesday in Science

It was a privilege to walk around the Science Faculty on Tuesday morning this week. In Ms Singh’s leeson, Year 10 students were watching a video about rock formation and the creation of ores. Books contained a good amount of work and there was evidence of marking and feedback, purple pen responses and some feedback stickers. In Mrs McNaughton’s Year 7 class students were also very engaged. Worksheets were adapted to be very visual and easily accessible by the students. There was a very positive atmosphere in the class and lots of praise being given to encourage learning. Students had pride in their work and there was lots of evidence of marking and feedback and purple pen responses.

Good questioning was teasing out understanding and identifying misconceptions in Mrs Ram’s Year 10 chemistry lesson. Students showed pride in their work and their books were well presented. There was evidence of marking and feedback in line with the school policy. The use of a range of stickers, purple pen responses and green pen marking were clear and being used to improve progress of learning. Quality First Learning was supporting all students. Good use was being made of the interactive whiteboard in Miss Roberts’ Year 10 lesson and students were looking at a clear diagram learning about atoms and isotopes. Books were marked. Good targeted questioning and differentiated explanations were supporting all learners to make progress.
In Ms Karunthilake’s Year 13 biology lesson the teacher was using excellent questions to assess students’ knowledge and was encouraging them to explain their learning to others to consolidate understanding and progress. Students commented that the teacher’s explanations were helpful to support their learning and achievement. Student notebooks showed great pride in their learning and were well presented to enable them to effectively revise from in their future exams.  In Miss Ali’s Year 10 biology class students were completing a worksheet demonstrating their learning about nicotine and carbon monoxide. Behaviour for learning was good and all students were engaged and making progress.
Year 12 A level biology students in Ms Atchuthan’s class were recapping on prior knowledge answering questions being posed by their teacher. Additional questions were taking their answers to the next level and encouraging deeper thinking. Folders were well organised and work was being posted on the google classroom. In Mrs Bevil-Gahan’s lesson Year 7 students were being really well supported and were making excellent progress over time, as evidenced by superb work in their well presented books. Marking and feedback was encouraging great progress and a variety of tasks and activities were engaging all students in their learning.
It made for a superb start to the day in science!
