Illuminating Classes With Non-Fiction!
On Wednesday 26th January, we held our 4th Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R) event of the academic year- this time with the spotlight on non-fiction.
As you know, BMS has a strong reading culture. We are all very used to these events so it was a pleasure to see how creative BMS teachers are in the choice of text they share, as well as the activities students engage in after their reading.
Here’s just a small sample of the high quality reading experiences and expectations our students encountered.
Ms Hargreaves’ year 10 French class really enjoyed their lesson, especially the different choice of reading challenge they were given through the range of MFL magazines she provided.
In business studies, Mr Malik’s year 10 class explored several articles on the subject of BAME representation in top jobs.

Ms Dunsby’s year 12 class explored a challenging, but fascinating article on the sanity of Hitler and the psychological problems he projected.
In my year 13 A Level English Language and Literature class, we were reading a mixture of articles covering critical responses and the cultural context of F Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby‘. We then captured key points and quotations on sticky display paper ready for our next PPE DIRT redrafting lesson.
Mrs Turton’s library studies students had a choice of non fiction texts to work their way through. After reading, they had 15 minutes to capture their learning on a book review template. The challenge was to share this with a partner who added purple pen comments on how clearly the information had been presented.
Mr Carter’s year 8 class were so engrossed in their reading books they didn’t want to stop when the bell sounded again!
Thank you to everyone for another successful D.E.A.R event at BMS.
Happy reading!
