The Power of Questioning

Mrs Jackson, our talented Leader in English and Media, delivered our Friday Faculty Foci in Staff Briefing last week and rounded off our second Marking and Feedback Fortnight of the year by sharing her thoughts about the use of questioning in the marking and assessment process.

She reminded colleagues that Bloom’s Taxonomy provide`s a strategy of asking questions of increasing challenge to tease out understanding; in highlighting this approach, Mrs Jackson encouraged us to, not only use this strategy ‘in the moment’ in classroom discussions, but also in our written marking. Often by asking a challenge question and demanding a response from students in their DIRT (Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time) it really serves as a useful way of moving work to the next level and ensuring good progress. It was a great way to end what has been a very positive fortnight in school.
