Black History Month Assemblies
Assistant Headteacher Ms Silla led a series of very poignant and informative assemblies this week to launch Black History Month.
This year’s Black History Month theme, “Reclaiming Narratives,” marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. By emphasising this theme, the idea is to shine a brighter light on stories, allegories, and histories that underscore a commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage.
At the end of the assembly Ms Silla quoted from Carter Woodson “What we need is not a history of selected races and nations, but a history of the world void of national bias, race hate and religious prejudice.” We all want this in our families, our schools, our local communities, our nation and across the world.
To end the assemblies this week Ms Silla also led a one minute silence to honour the life of Zach Barnes, a young member of our Year 8 community whose young life was tragically cut short last week.
All in all it was a very fitting and memorable assembly and I would like to thank Ms Silla and all our students for conducting themselves so responsibly and respectfully in these extremely poignant moments.
