Our Poppies for Remembrance Day

On the 10th of November, we made our very own poppies ready for Remembrance Day, in the brand new textiles club in C12 on Tuesdays after school.

We used scrap red fabrics of our choice to make the petals of our poppies which symbolises the blood of the soldiers that fell. We used green fabric to make the leaf and we ironed it onto a thin bit of interfacing and then we used a sewing machine to neaten up the edges with poppies petals so they don’t fray. We chose black buttons to add the middle part of the flower symbolising death. After all the pieces were ready we put them all together by sewing the middle button to all parts. The pin comes next and to do that we used a hot glue gun to attach the safety pin so they were ready to wear.

With making these poppies we have learnt techniques like how to use a sewing machine as well as understanding what the poppy means and why we use it. For example Simon learnt what the different colours and position of the poppy means and Michael learnt how to use a sewing machine. Seth learnt about different materials and what they are used for.

In addition to the poppies, Seth also completed his lovely sensory activity mat that he thoughtfully and carefully made for his Great Grandma.

By Seth, Simon, Ruben and Michael (Year 8)

We know that Remembrance Day marks an important event in the UK and so it was great to see our Year 8 students Seth Freeman, Ruben Amin, Simon Fitt and Michael Faulkner investing their time in learning some new skills for an important cause.
