A useful way to think about attendance is to imagine watching a television series but missing every tenth episode. You might still follow the main storyline, but important details, character development and key moments would be lost. Learning works in a similar way. Each lesson builds on previous learning, and missing even small chunks can make it harder for students to feel confident and successful.
Attendance is not only linked to academic success. Being in school regularly helps students establish routines, develop resilience, build confidence and maintain important friendships. School is a place where young people learn far more than just the curriculum; they learn how to work with others, solve problems, manage challenges and develop the skills they will carry into adulthood.
And it is not just about arriving at school each morning. Being in lessons and engaging with learning is equally important. Sometimes students may attend school but spend time out of lessons or miss significant parts of their timetable. While they are physically present on site, valuable learning opportunities are still being missed.
Every lesson offers something important – new knowledge, discussion, opportunities to ask questions, develop skills and strengthen relationships with teachers and peers. Missing lessons can create gaps in understanding, increase feelings of stress about schoolwork and make it more difficult for students to feel connected to their learning. Over time, this can affect both progress and confidence.
We understand that there can be many reasons why attending school or lessons feels difficult at times. As a school, we are committed to supporting students and families to overcome these barriers wherever possible. If you are struggling with attendance or finding it difficult to access lessons, please reach out to us. Early conversations often make a significant difference, and together we can identify the support needed to help students feel safe, confident and successful in school.
Every day matters. Every lesson matters. By working together, we can ensure that all students have the opportunity to make the most of their education and enjoy a positive and rewarding school experience.
