“Kindness Matters” is a weekly initiative where older students spend time in younger years classrooms, supporting teachers and helping pupils with their learning. Though simple in idea, it has a powerful impact—not just on the younger children, but on the students who volunteer as well. One of the key themes of the programme is respect. By entering a younger classroom, students learn to model positive behaviour—listening carefully, speaking politely, and valuing each child’s ideas. Younger pupils look up to them, so demonstrating respect helps create a calm, inclusive environment where everyone feels heard and appreciated. The second theme is responsibility. Taking part in “Kindness Matters” means committing time and effort each week. Whether it’s helping with reading, assisting with activities, or supporting the teacher, students learn the importance of being reliable and proactive. They begin to understand that their actions have a real impact on others’ learning and confidence. Finally, the programme strengthens relationships. Spending time together builds trust between age groups and creates a sense of community within the school. Younger students feel more comfortable asking for help, while older students gain confidence and empathy. These connections go beyond the classroom, making the school a more supportive and friendly place for everyone. Overall, “Kindness Matters” shows that small acts of support can lead to meaningful change. By promoting respect, responsibility, and relationships, it helps shape a more positive school culture—one kind act at a time.
