SEND open morning

On Tuesday we held our first SEND open morning, in liaison with DSPL9. The event was to showcase to other professionals and settings the inclusive curriculum and practice we have at Bushey Meads. SENDCO’s, Senior leaders and Headteachers from local schools joined us in The Laurel to hear from a selection of staff from Bushey Meads.

Mrs Seed, SENDCo, assisted by Mrs Lee and Mrs Hedges, Deputy SENDCo’s described the structure of support in place at Bushey Meads for students with EHCP’s and also on the wider SEND register. Mrs Hughes, Intervention Manager, explained how she coordinates interventions for students with additional needs using her team of Lead Learning Assistants to deliver small group workshops for Speech and Language, Sensory and Physical, numeracy and literacy.

Mrs Isles, Alternative Curriculum Coordinator, then showcased the wide range of courses available at KS3 and KS4 to help students succeed, including Kings’ trust, horticulture and hair and beauty.
Finally, Pathway Coordinators Mrs McNaughton and Miss Roberts and SEND Lead Teacher Mrs Bevil-Gahan explained how work is adapted in core lessons to ensure students can access the learning at an appropriate level but still feel included in the mainstream curriculum.
The feedback from the visitors was overwhelmingly positive, with all of them taking away new ideas they can implement in their own settings.
