Up, Up and Away! – Rocket Launch Day at Bushey Meads – Miss Amaani Ali
This week, we welcomed some very excited students from Little
Reddings Primary School for a cross-phase science project that was
truly out of this world.
Under the expert guidance of our brilliant Head of Physics, Mr
Newton, and the ever-enthusiastic Science teacher, Mr Tahir, the pupils
had the chance to build and launch their very own water rockets – and
what a blast it was!
The Scene
The back field was buzzing with excitement (and a bit of splash!)
as students prepped their creations, carefully filled them with water,
and counted down to launch. With a whoosh, each rocket soared
into the sky — some spinning, some zooming, all met with cheers,
laughter, and a few “wows” from the crowd.
It was a day full of teamwork, curiosity, and messy fun — exactly
what science should be!
The Science Bit (Don’t Worry – It’s Simple!)
So how does a water rocket work? It’s a clever use of Newton’s Third Law (how fitting that Mr
Newton was involved!): For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
In short: students pumped air into a bottle partly filled with water. When released, the air pressure
forces the water out with a lot of force — and that pushes the rocket upwards. It’s the same idea that
helps real rockets lift off… just with less fire and a bit more splash!
Why It Mattered
This was more than just fun — it was a brilliant example
of learning through doing. Students explored physics concepts
in a way that was exciting and hands-on, making science feel
real, relevant, and inspiring.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to our visiting students
from Little Reddings for bringing their enthusiasm, and to Mr
Newton and Mr Tahir for making the day such a success.
There’s no doubt – we’ve got a few future rocket scientists in
the making!
Next stop: the Moon?
We’ll see what our young engineers come up with next!
