Bushey Meads School was buzzing with curiosity, excitement and the occasional shout of
“Did that just explode?!” as we celebrated British Science Week in spectacular style.
Thanks to the planning of Miss Ali and Mr Newton, students were treated to a whole week
packed with fascinating experiments, hands-on investigations and some wonderfully weird
science. Activities were not only running during lunchtime sessions, but were also woven
into KS3 science lessons, meaning students across the school had the chance to get involved
in the scientific fun.
Each day brought a brand-new scientific adventure.
The week kicked off with the legendary Screaming
jelly babies experiment in Chemistry. Students
discovered what happens when jelly babies meet
powerful oxidisers – resulting in a surprisingly
dramatic reaction that was equal parts science and
theatre. Safe to say, those jelly babies definitely made
themselves heard!
Physics took centre stage with investigations into Total Internal Reflection, where students
explored how light can be trapped and guided – the same principle used in fibre optics that
power the internet. In another highlight, students even explored ways of investigating
the speed of light using chocolate – possibly the tastiest physics experiment ever conducted
at Bushey Meads.Biology enthusiasts were equally busy.
Students took part in a rat dissection, giving
them an up-close look at mammalian anatomy
and a real appreciation for how the bodyworks. Later in the week, budding geneticists extracted DNA from strawberries, proving that cutting-edge science can sometimes start in the fruit bowl.
Another spectacular moment came with the famous Elephant Toothpaste experiment, where rapid chemical reactions produced towering columns of colourful foam – definitely one of the most eye-catching moments of the week.
Across the school, classrooms and laboratories were filled with curiosity, laughter and plenty
of “wow” moments as students asked questions, made predictions and watched science come
alive in front of their eyes. All students who attended were amazed by what they saw, and for
many it sparked a brighter interest in science, inspiring them to think more deeply about the
world around them.
British Science Week at Bushey Meads proved that science isn’t just something you read in
textbooks – it’s exciting, surprising and sometimes a little bit messy. A huge thank you
to Miss Ali, Mr Newton and the whole science department for creating such a fantastic week
of discovery.
One thing is certain: at Bushey Meads, science definitely doesn’t stay quiet… especially if
there are screaming jelly babies involved!
