This year the English Faculty will be honouring Charles Dickens by promoting his novels each month in the BMS newsletter.

With Year 8 currently studying his work, it seems appropriate to introduce the novel they are currently reading: Great Expectations.

One of Dickens’ best-loved novels, Great Expectations tells the story of Philip Pirrip, nicknamed Pip, a young boy born into humble beginnings with few prospects for advancement until a mysterious benefactor allows him to escape for a more promising life in London.

The story opens when young Pip accidentally meets a convict out in the marsh one Christmas Eve. He has no idea that his life is about to change forever. The incredible events following this encounter, and the strange tale of Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella, have made Great Expectations a must-read since it was first published in 1860.
