NEWS
The new term sees the start of the 2020 basketball season with practices and matches taking place throughout the next few weeks. Each year group has a lunchtime practice session available to all students with teams competing in the District Basketball Leagues. Special mention must go to our Senior Boys basketball team which is probably the strongest basketball team Bushey Meads has ever had. They are competing on both the District and County competitions and we look forward to following their progress. Also on Wednesday and Thursday the popular gymnastics club has started with students working towards the District festival later in the term. Netball is also continuing for the younger years with our Year 7 and 8 football teams also looking forward to their respective District League Football finals.
The last couple of weeks has seen our Year 11,12 and 13 vocational sports students sitting unit exams and we have been really pleased with the preparation and effort they have made in the build up to the exams. We wish them luck with the results in March. This term will also see the Year 12 Cambridge Technical Sports students taking a series of coaching sessions with the younger students. It is great to see our senior students making such a positive contribution to school sport as part of their course. The Year 11 GCSE PE revision session will continue all the way up to the exams in PE with ALL students strongly advised to attend every session.
There is lots to look forward to including hopefully many students who have made the decision to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle in 2020. Our Health Week is taking place in March and we look forward to seeing if our students can show improved fitness levels. Regular participation in exercise both in and out of school will really make a difference.

FOOTBALL
Year 10 v St Clement Danes (District League) AWAY Mr Cartledge
Date : Thursday 9th January 2020
Result : Lost 4-0
Squad : S Booth, E Anthony, M Chaudhury, C Lynch, T Bates, T Barnes, A Kothary, R Mohammud, B Kabucho, M Machen, M Keough, N Amoako, F Pierson, H Khan
Commended performances : S Booth, F Pierson, B Kabucho
Comment : The Year 10 boys finished their spell in the District Premier league with a 4-0 defeat to strong opposition in SCD. The boys played really in the first half and were unlucky to go a goal behind after 30 minutes. However 2 quick goals gave them an uphill task in the 2nd half and although showing great spirit and effort the boys were eventually defeated 4-0. It has been a tough season but the boys have stuck to their passing principles and made good progress as a team. The boys continue to show great camaraderie and can be proud of their efforts.
BASKETBALL
Senior Boys v Parmiters (Away) Mr O’ Kelly
Date : Wednesday 8th January 2020
Result : Won 66 – 54
Squad : Charlie Lyall, David Ali-Lauzzana, Josh Billings, Yama Qarib, James Demir, Tolu Alade, Kees van der Lees, James Simmons, Archie Hayes, George Rowe, Nathaniel Dew
Commended performances : Josh Billings
Comment: Against what is traditionally a very strong basketball school the team bounced back from the earlier defeat to Queens in the County League. Going ahead early and with a big lead on the opponent, it was a perfect time to give more court time to the entire squad. The team should be very proud that they are performing so well.
Senior Boys v St Columbas (Home) Mr O’ Kelly
Date : Tuesday 14th January 2020
Result : Won 65 – 56
Squad : Charlie Lyall, David Ali-Lauzzana, Josh Billings, Yama Qarib, James Demir, Tolu Alade, Kees van der Leeuw, James Simmons, Beau Birnie
Commended performances : David Ali-Lauzzana
Comment: A fantastic performance against a very strong opponent. With the team dropping behind in the third period the pressure was on to get back ahead and the team certainly didn’t disappoint. Scoring regularly from outside the arc the 3 pointers took the team back ahead and into an insurmountable lead.
Year 8 Boys v Parmiters (Home) Mr Piper
Date : Wednesday 14th January 2020
Result : 21-19 (W)
Squad : A, Mohammad-Khan, K, Shahverdi-Moghadam . Ka, Shahverdi-Moghadam . J, Sims. A, Clark. Y, Nagathevan . T, Qarib. N, Bryan. L, Georgiou. N, Mitchell. S, Sharma.
Scorers : J, Sims (10). A, Clark (2), T, Qarib (2), L. Georgiou (4). S, Sharma (3)
Commended performances : J, Sims.
Comment: Tonight we met a strong Parmiters team who moved the ball down court very quickly and were often clinical at the basket. After the first quarter we trailed by 6 so spent the second quarter aiming to improve our defensive shape to prevent further baskets being conceded. In the third and fourth quarter we began to step up our offensive approach, with the help of J, Sims who netted 5 baskets for us in an impressive display! In the final stages of the game we had to ensure we kept our discipline in defence once more and managed to see out a 2 point victory in our first game of this season- well done all!
