PE CONCEPT of the Week: TEAMWORK (HEART) Mrs Cooper
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities.
Teamwork really does ‘make the dreamwork’ an often heard saying and one we have tried to enforce in our PE lessons this week with it being our key concept and linking to the heart strand of the curriculum.
We have lots of opportunities for students to develop and show their teamwork skills in PE from our vast array of extra-curricular activities through to choreographing routines in gymnastics and cheerleading and learning how to work as a team, for success, in doubles matches in racquet sports.
In year 9 rhythmic gymnastics lessons this week we have worked in pairs to develop new skills using hoops and ribbons to create short routines. Rhythmic gymnastics requires equipment to be passed between each member of the team whilst showing fluency and aesthetics, teamwork has been key to ensure the apparatus continues moving and the routines are coordinated.
Healthy lifestyles lessons have also encouraged the students to not only develop their heart health, looking at different types of training methods, but also to work as a team to collect points in ‘cone raider’ with winning teams rewarded at the end of the lesson.
Students are regularly provided with opportunities and the responsibility to demonstrate their teamwork skills when preparing for and concluding activities in both lesson and extra-curricular activities. At after school Trampoline club students have to work together to set up, under supervision, the trampolines and relative safety equipment required for the session to take place. Lunchtime clubs also require students to work as a team to set up and put away table-tennis equipment in order to maximise playing times.
Teamwork is extremely important in sport, even in individual activities (swimming, marathon running, javelin throwing) where both performer and coach need to work together for positive outcomes. And it’s also important in all aspects of life and hopefully the students have gained a good insight into the benefits of being a ‘successful’ team member with our concept focus in PE lessons this week.
BASKETBALL
Year 10 Boys v Rickmansworth (District League) HOME Mr Harris
Date: Thursday 9th February 2025
Result: Lost 21 – 26
Scorers : H Hayward 2, N Konopka 4, R Carbon-Felix 3, K Banfield 2, A Yu 4, K Gibson 4, H McManus 2
Squad: K. Gibson, H. McManus, K. Banfield, R. Carbon-Felix, N. Konopka, E. Henry, Z. O’Hara, A. Yu, H. Hayward
Comment: The first game of the year in basketball for the Year 10 team with limited preparation. In the first quarter, we started slow and gave the ball away a lot, resulting in us being 10 – 2 down by the end of the first. In the second quarter, we regained control of the game and managed to take a 2-point lead into half time through some excellent ball movement from those on the court at this time. Moving into the third, we continued to battle hard and by the end of the third it was in the final we lost a bit of control. We ended up conceding several baskets earlier on and ultimately we were unable to come back from the deficit. A well contested and enjoyable game for all of those involved. Special thanks to those who supported the match.
FOOTBALL

Squad 1: F Hoy, F Gee, K Johnson, J Lewis, K Mistry, D Snowden, L Khan
Results: Won 2, Lost 2
Squad 2: J Wright, R Durant, J Evans, S Johnson, M Jaji, L Douglas-Grant, E Platt
Results: Drew 1, Lost 3
Comment: On Monday 14 boys from Year 9 represented the school in the District Development 6-a-side competitions at Westfield. With a number of Year 9 boys also representing the school at rugby on the same evening it was a great opportunity for more students to get involved in some competitive extra-curricular sport. Both teams played some really good football in a closely contested tournament. Special mention to F Hoy who was outstanding in goal for the A squad in their 2 wins.
Year 9 v Marriotts School (County Plate) AWAY Mr O’Kelly
Date: Wednesday 8th January 2025
Results: Lost 4-1
Scorers: B. Spencer
Commended performances: R. Doran & F. Gee
Comment: The Year 9 football team faced a tough challenge in the Hertfordshire County Plate as they were defeated by Marriotts School. Played on a narrow pitch, the game became a physical battle from start to finish. Despite playing well and working hard to keep possession and coming close in the first half, hitting the post twice, BMS struggled to keep pace with Marriotts’ clinical finishing.
The team fought hard but ultimately couldn’t recover after Marriotts took control in the second half, scoring crucial goals that sealed the victory. While the result was disappointing, the team’s effort and resilience were commendable, and they will look to bounce back in their next match.
Year 10 v Knights Templar (County Plate) AWAY Mr Harris
Date: Tuesday 14th January
Result: Won 5 – 3
Scorers: F. Fowler, H. Wills, N. Walters, H. McManus
Squad: J. Hiett (GK), S. Ardeleanu, K. Gibson, L. Avci, H. Neal, H. McManus, N. Walters, F. Fowler, H. Wills, F. Fowler, M. Donnelly, K. Banfield, R. Cooper.
Commended performances:
Comment: On Tuesday afternoon, we visited Knights Templar school for a County Plate football match. As the game started, we found ourselves under a bit of pressure early on which led to Knights Templar taking an early lead. Following this, we started to get into the game, winning the ball back, and playing some nice passing and good football. We equalised from a corner, where F. Fowler powered home from close range. Next, H. McManus got in and took us ahead as he managed to fumble the ball home after some excellent interplay down the right hand side. H. Wills then converted a penalty to take a 3 – 1 lead into half time. Into the second half and we switched off early on. We managed to concede two goals after we changed formation slightly and therefore left ourselves open on the wing. However, quickly after conceding the equaliser to make it 3 – 3, we managed to come right back and score. N. Walters drove through the entire team to smash it past the keeper. Finally, we scored another just before the end of the game, making it 5-3. Well done all, a deserved victory, into the next round.
NETBALL

Commended performances: Y Khan for great defending in the circle
Comment: This was a tough first game for year 9 after the Xmas break. In the first quarter the girls needed to improve their passing and defending down court. In the second quarter the girls settled into the game and there were some impressive interceptions and shooting. In the last quarter RMS pulled away and were just too far ahead for the girls to win. A determined and well fought match . Well done girls.

Comment: This was a very close game from start to finish. At the end of the first quarter we were one goal up. In the second quarter the girls became more confident and there were some impressive interceptions and defending by all players. Unfortunately the girls just lost by one goal but all players worked very hard as a team and should be very pleased with their performance.Well done.
