PE CONCEPT of the Week: Confidence (Heart) Mrs Cartledge
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition, we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT which is delivered through a range of activities.
This week’s concept is Confidence and relates to the Heart strand of the assessment model.
When students feel confident, they are more likely to engage actively in PE lessons. Confidence helps reduce anxiety about performing in front of peers, trying new activities, or being judged. This leads to a more inclusive environment where every student feels empowered to participate.Confidence can have a direct impact on a student’s physical performance. When students believe in their abilities, they are more likely to push themselves and try harder.
Developing Confidence in PE lessons for students can translate into a more positive attitude toward physical activity in general. Students who feel good about their abilities are more likely to continue engaging in physical activity outside of school, contributing to healthier lifestyles and promoting lifelong fitness habits. Developing students’ Confidence can lead to increased cooperation and social interactions which can lead to increased mental health. Overcoming these obstacles can build resilience, which is beneficial both in and out of the gym.
During health week all students will take part in the bleep test. This test pushes students out of their comfort zones. A confident mindset helps students approach this challenge with a “can-do attitude’. Confidence during the bleep test can really make a difference in how you perform. It’s all about mindset, preparation, and pacing.
Attending our wide range of extra-curricular clubs and participating regularly in PE lessons can help with increasing Confidence.

DISTRICT DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONS !
Year 8A Boys v Futures Academy (District Division 1 CUP FINAL) @ Queens Mr Cartledge
Date : Thursday 20th March 2025
Result : Won 3-2
Scorers : E Rumney 2, R Samin
Squad : D Fryer(GK), O Phillips (Capt), C Allan, G Fogden, D Isles, T Colby, Z Butler, D Henry, R Samin, A Cohen, J Magkafourakis, E Rumney, G Fogden, D Mason
Commended performances : Whole team !
Comment :The year 8 boys put in a fantastic team performance to edge a very closely contested District League Final. Having lost last year’s final the boys had extra motivation for the game and the loss of 2 key players through injury/illness meant it was going to be a real challenge to come out on top. The boys started the game well with both sides struggling to create any clear cut openings in a very close game. However the boys moved into the lead with a fine E Rumney header from an excellent D Mason corner. Futures started the 2nd half really strongly but some resolute defending kept the lead intact before E Rumney broke away for a well taken second goal. Futures continued to apply pressure and a penalty saw them narrow the lead to 2-1. A superb save from D Fryer and a block from T Colby just about kept the boys in front and they were rewarded with another breakaway goal from R Samin. Futures continued to battle and with 3 minutes left made it 3-2 but the BMS team held on for a deserved 3-2 win. All the boys can be really proud of a fantastic team effort characterised by hard work and support for each other. Special mention to D Fryer who made his school debut in goal after being called up at a late notice. Well done to all the boys !
Year 8 INTER HOUSE BASKETBALL
Mr Cartledge/Mr James
Tuesday saw the boys in Year 8 take part in the Inter House basketball tournament. It was great to see the boys working so hard in a tournament played in great spirit. The format was a round robin tournament with teams playing each other twice. The combined Beech/Willow team dominated winning all 4 games with R Samin top scoring with 22 points. We are really emphasising during Health week the importance of students getting involved in as many sports as possible particularly those considering sports based qualifications and it was great to see boys from a range of PE classes getting involved. Well done to all those that took part.
