PE CONCEPT of the Week: Performance (HANDS) Mr O’Kelly

The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition, we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT which is delivered through a range of activities. This week’s concept is

Performance and relates to the Hands strand of the assessment model.

In PE, the concept of performance extends beyond physical ability; it encompasses skill execution, decision-making, and the ability to apply techniques under pressure. Through the concept curriculum, students explore how factors such as practice, mindset, and teamwork influence performance in different sports and physical activities. They learn that performance is not only about individual excellence but also about adapting to challenges, refining movement patterns, and working collaboratively to achieve success. By reflecting on their own performances and those of others, BMS students develop a deeper understanding of how effort, resilience, and strategy contribute to improvement, reinforcing key values such as discipline, perseverance, and confidence in physical education.

Year 10 Sports Studies trip to Lee Valley Velopark  Mr Cartledge

On Thursday March 13th the Year 10 Sports Studies group visited the Lee Valley Velopark, a London 2012 Olympic venue to take part in a BMX and Mountain bike session as part of the Outdoor Education Unit of the course. The boys had completed an assignment on planning the trip and were now being assessed in their bike handling skills in the 2 disciplines. The boys all made great progress on the day and the instructors were really impressed with their resilience in what for many were new sports. Special mention must go to L Dimon who proved himself to be an outstanding bike handler in both disciplines. The boys are now completing an assignment evaluating the day and can be really proud of their efforts.

BASKETBALL

Year 7 Boys v RICKMANSWORTH  (District League) HOME  Mr Harris

Date: Wednesday 12th March 2025

Result: Lost 12 – 14

Scorers : M. Thomas-Buck (10), S. Isles (2)

Squad: M. Thomas-Buck, D. Gascoigne, D. Hope, N. Cunningham, R. Gurney, G. Bees, S. Isles, T. Muranaka, K. Akarigidi, L. Soteriou

Comment: A long break since our last game and we came back against Rickmansworth School. We faced off in a highly competitive game where we ended up with defeat. Despite making a strong start our defensive work was not good enough and we allowed Rickmansworth too many opportunities to score. We found out the hard way that without marking our men, it opens up too much space and we end up conceding. A difficult afternoon, well done Rickmansworth.

Year 7 Boys v CROXLEY DANES  (District League) AWAY  Mr Harris

Date: Thursday 12th March 2025

Result:Won 29 – 8

Scorers

Squad: M. Thomas-Buck, D. Gascoigne, N. Cunningham, J. Hayward G. Bees, S. Isles, T. Muranaka, K. Akarigidi, L. Soteriou

Comment: A hugely successful afternoon against Croxley Danes in this basketball match. After a difficult day the day before, we found our way again and managed to dominate huge parts of this game. We were scoring comfortably and we were looking good on the ball. We found ourselves creating space, heading in and out to under the basket creating the chances and moving the ball well. The boys put up a fine display, resulting in the 29 – 8 victory. Well done boys on a successful season as a new team. Keep it up into the next basketball season

NETBALL

Year 7 Netball v District Tournament (Parmiters) Miss Sunpongco

Date: Monday 17th March 2025

Results: 1st Place

Squad: A. Bateman, N. Mowle, E. Bain, V. Delenska, F. Shire, J. He

arn, E. Coetzee and F. Sheward

Commended Performances: ALL! An amazing first season together!

Comment: The Year 7 girls netball team triumphed in our first-ever tournament, securing victory on goal difference despite a narrow 4-3 loss in the final match. We defeated Watford Girls’ Grammar, RMS C, Parmiter’s B, and Westfield, displaying strong teamwork, defense, and accurate shooting. The competition was tough, but their resilience paid off. With games being only 10 minutes long, the girls had to keep up with the pace and ensure they stayed ahead of the opposition. This incredible achievement marks the beginning of an exciting journey for our team, and we look forward to more successes ahead! Well done girls!
