More Able Week

What an absolute joy for me to be invited to see such an abundance of activities over the past few days to celebrate our More Able Week.  As part of our daily lessons we strive to stretch and challenge all students in the classroom.   We aim for every child to be ‘More Able’ at the end of the lesson than they were at the beginning; nurturing their journey of progress throughout the curriculum and through enriching experiences.

This week there were countless enriching activities including a guest dance professional who led a workshop in our main hall on Monday; a trip to Cambridge with our Time to Sh9ne year 11 students; a Mock Trial competition at Oxford Magistrates Court; a visiting artist hosting a sculpture workshop and a Rotary Club visit by our technology students for a problem solving challenge!
Within lessons there were student and subject leaders delivering sessions in an array of subjects, including Business and Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences.  Miss Kwok and Mr Dowty met with their subject leaders and they created and collated resources, particularly for the next Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) event. The Junior Maths Challenge was launched in lessons and as part of the extra-curricular programme which provided a buzz around the Maths faculty.  Miss Brown also moved students between sets in year 11 following their successful results in the recent PPE exams.
I visited some wonderful lessons and was treated to a visual learning display in Psychology that was being created by the students themselves.  It was fab to see the ‘Get Gritty’ book being used and displayed in this lesson too.  Miss Pattni was making bow tie’s with a group of year 9 students; designing the fabric, ready to be printed next lesson.  Miss Knowles was demonstrating some superb higher order questioning techniques in the A’Level English lesson on The Handmaid’s Tale, linking themes to recent topical events and eliciting information in order to up-level students’ responses.
Our Community Leaders went on a visit to the local care home where they engaged with the residents, socialising and entertaining them.  They are now getting to know the residents and thoroughly enjoy this experience.  Thank you also to our governors for supporting the community leaders and for enjoying their recent presentation at the full governors meeting.
We had a fruitful Student Parliament meeting this week where student voice was heard and acted upon.  Form representatives will feed back the minutes during CDC time next week.
Some of our year 7 ambassadors attended Hertsmere’s 12th Annual Youth Conference with Miss Smart on Wednesday, also sharing their student voice at the borough venue; developing confidence and presentation skills along the way.
There is so much to be proud of this week and every week here at Bushey Meads School.  Our active learning environment and culture of nurturing young leaders is one to be celebrated.
