Arts Award Spotlight – Bushey Meads...

I went to the art gallery as part of my Arts Award challenge. The Arts Award is a certificate achieved by documenting processes rather than final products, and part of what I am required to do to achieve my Silver Arts Award is review an arts event; to be a consumer of art, not just an artist. Originally, it was meant to be a trip to an external location, but it fell through. This was a backup option, but was needed due to situations like.

Portrait in BMS gallery – T-ala Marsh

Painting in BMS gallery – Emily Anderson

I think this piece is even better. It uses the philosophy of less is more, and utilizes it to create a striking piece. It uses only two colours, to help the green really stand out. Its usage of plain cartridge paper allows it to be even simpler, and its placement mimics the leaves. The simple leaves and complex byro/pencil background create a unique juxtaposition to the hyper simplistic leaves.

Sculpture in BMS gallery – Emily Anderson

Out of all of the pieces I’ve reviewed, this one is, by far, my favourite. The textures, colour, and sculpting create an unnerving feel, which I adore. While some may think that lacing tissue paper on a mask needs no skill, you need artistic skill to do it well. It uses a lot of dark, cool tones with contrasting skin warm tones. It adds onto this by using unnatural colours. It appears the base masks are modrock, the additions are tissue paper, and it used acrylic paint. Hanging from beams is what this piece uses to display eeriness.

The Bushey Meads Art Gallery was a refreshing taste of the arts world to come. The modest size rooted us in the humble and real beginnings of the artists; but are we not all from modest beginnings? We all must start somewhere, and eventually, maybe my work will be presented in this one of a kind space. The galley is located within the school with the aforementioned name. It is quite small, taking up a singular room. Of course, this is to be expected, as this school is not primarily focused on art. It mainly comprises portraits, sculptures or still life created by students, primarily, but not limited to, GCSE and A Level Art students.

What I’ve learned from this event mostly consists of learning unique aspects of art. These include colour choice, texture choice, and canvas choice. I also learned about where you place your art mattering a good amount for its meaning. I would recommend visiting this gallery and experiencing the art of the future. Do note that this is not a professional institution, so do not expect a specious complex of rooms. Despite this, the composition of the art work and the quality of it is well worth the trip.
