The Year 11 Sports Studies group were really disappointed to have their 4 day residential trip to Cornwall cancelled in the summer due to Covid. The trip involves practical experience of a range of outdoor activities and forms a key part of the assessment for Unit R056 Developing knowledge and experience in outdoor activities for the course. However just before half term the group managed to complete an intensive kayaking training day designed to give them experience of a new sport and an opportunity to develop a range of skills for assessment. The course was run by two British Canoeing instructors who were really impressed with the effort and application of the group. The students learnt a series of strokes, the relevant safety procedures including a capsize and then completed an assault course assessment. The day was finished with a game of kayaking water polo where the group put in place all the skills they had learnt during the day. It was a really enjoyable experience and the students can be really proud of the progress they made and the subsequent grades awarded. Many thanks also to Mr Hammond from Base who supported the group throughout the day as well as driving a minibus.
