Each half term, our SLC’s meet with Mrs Pattni and Mr Symeou. Our Student Learning Consultants have many responsibilities and one specific element of their role is to meet with us each half term to discuss and share their input about various topics to do with teaching and learning.
This half term, the staff reading group read an article about the use of quiz type activities and apps such as Kahoot and Quizlet. As we know, the current climate has presented us with some challenges and although the use of quiz apps were being used before, they are proving to be a useful, informative tool even more so now.
Apps such as Quizlet and Memrise, have long been tools for teachers to test students’ knowledge. They also become a resource for students to keep in touch with the learning, should they be self-isolating.
Some of our Students Learning Consultants were asked their thoughts about the use of these apps and they gave some useful insights. Jeslin Saji (12 Oak) said, ‘My teachers use quizzes such as kahoot which help me learn content as it helps recall memory. To improve, I’d say maybe use it more regularly at the end of a lesson or even end of term.’
Another SLC, Siyona Hindocha (9 Elm) said,
‘In my opinion quizzes are an extremely beneficial learning platform route to go down. They help engage and interact students with one another, identify known and unknown knowledge and also have fun whilst learning. Students tend to enjoy the lessons much more whilst learning a great amount.
It has definitely made independent learning much easier. Especially due to these unprecedented times of corona many students have been sent home to isolate and I myself have also. Quizzes were a great way to keep me occupied and engaged in the online lessons being set via google classroom and made me want to continue learning. It has also helped me develop knowledge and pay more attention to particular subjects/ topics I may not be as familiar with.
