PE CONCEPT of the Week: Responsibility (Head) Mr Harris
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition, we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT which is delivered through a range of activities.
As we approach the end of the term, students have been focusing on responsibility in PE through the Head, Hands, Heart model. They have explored what responsibility means in sports and physical activity, from being prepared for lessons and understanding their role in a team (Head) to demonstrating responsibility in action by following rules, setting up equipment, and making fair decisions (Hands). Beyond this, students have also reflected on the impact of their actions on others, ensuring they are supportive, respectful teammates who contribute positively to the learning environment (Heart).
A great example of this in action was Year 7 rugby, where students developed teamwork and decision-making skills throughout the half term. They have taken responsibility for positioning on the pitch, ensuring they are ready to receive passes and support teammates in attack and defence. They have also demonstrated responsibility through safe tackling techniques, effective communication, and showing sportsmanship, whether in victory or defeat. As the term comes to a close, it’s great to see students embracing responsibility in their PE lessons, helping them build essential life skills such as leadership, accountability, and teamwork—valuable traits they will carry into the new year and beyond.
HEALTH WEEK
The end of the spring term was the 13th annual whole school Health Week with all students in years 7-11 again completing their fitness testing. The aim of the week is to raise awareness about healthy lifestyles and for students to consider how their current lifestyle affects their own levels of fitness. Students in Years 7-11 all completed the Multistage fitness test to generate some fitness data to track if individual fitness levels are developing in the school. The results of the testing will be available via the Learning Gateway after easter. The attitude of the students towards the testing was excellent with a real supportive environment in the sports hall. Well done to all those students who improved their score from the previous year
As part of the Health Week, on Friday 28th March the PE Faculty ran a day of recreational sport with students taking part in football, basketball, running, walking, “Just dance” and dodgeball activities. It was a great day with all students getting into the spirit of the event and over £1500 being raised for the British Heart Foundation Charity.
Year 9 INTER HOUSE BASKETBALL
Mr O’Kelly/Mr James
The sportshall was buzzing with excitement as students gathered for the much-anticipated Interhouse Basketball Tournament. With high energy, competitive spirit, and impressive teamwork on display, the event proved to be a fantastic showcase of sporting talent and house pride.
After a series of fast-paced and fiercely contested matches, Elm House emerged victorious, securing the championship with a remarkable 8 points. Their teamwork, skilful play, and determination set them apart, earning them well-deserved cheers from their supporters.
Sycamore House put up a strong challenge, finishing in second place with 5 points. Their resilience and sportsmanship were evident throughout the tournament, making every game an exciting spectacle. Meanwhile, Beech House, despite finishing with 2 points, demonstrated great enthusiasm and team spirit, ensuring the competition remained thrilling to the very end.
Beyond the scoreboard, the event was a true celebration of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and engagement. Congratulations to Elm House for their outstanding victory, and well done to all teams for making the competition so exciting. We look forward to the next interhouse challenge!

Commended performances: All
Comment: A group of players who have never played together is always difficult, but these boys did extremely well and managed to gel quickly as a team, ensuring that they come away with a victory. We split the game into two halves as there were 18 players selected. This allowed a variety of people to get some experience and game time. The teams were made up of a majority of people who had not represented the school at football before, but they all made a big impact. From front to back, the boys played some nice football and shared the ball around, creating great chances down the wings and pulling dangerous balls into the box on several occasions. D. Cohen scored the goal of the afternoon, where he shot from outside the box and curled it around the keeper and into the top of the net. An excellent performance by all, and well done to those who have represented the school for the first time.

Comment : A combined Y8 A and B team finished the football season off with a comfortable win over Immanuel. The boys had some good spells of passing football with all boys working hard for the team. It was great to see so many boys involved with the majority of the team mostly B team players. It has been an excellent season for Year 8 football and they can now look forward to the challenges of Premier League football in September.
