As a part of our strong relationship with local schools in the community, Watford Grammar School for Boys has kindly offered us a unique opportunity to attend a STEM lecture on Alzheimer’s disease, delivered by Professor Alasdair Gibb.
Professor Gibb’s research area is the study of glutamate receptor pharmacology in relation to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Gibb teaches pharmacology to BSc pharmacology students, medical students, students studying Biomedical Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Sciences.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative condition characterised by synapse loss, cognitive decline and impaired ability to form and retain new memories. AD has a growing impact on families and Society as the populations of the world grow older. It is also a significant economic burden for health care systems. No effective treatments are available but one area of active research is to understand the effects of AD at excitatory synapses where the neurotransmitter glutamate signals between neurons in the brain by activating glutamate receptors.
This lecture will consider how glutamate synapses work and why this is relevant to understanding the problem of AD.
The lecture is taking place on Wednesday the 22nd March 2023 at 16:00 in WGSB STEM Hall
This invitation is open to all students and staff at Bushey Meads School.
Please email Mr Abusef ASAP if you would like to attend this unmissable lecture by Professor Alasdair Gibb.
