I continue to be impressed with the quality of independent projects received as part of Black History Month.
Leila from Year 7 researched the impact Marcus Rashford has had on society. She commented that Marcus showed that he “cared about people who have having hard times and are struggling”. I was interested to discover that Rashford was born on Halloween night – so will be celebrating his birthday very soon. Leila’s project also reflected on why she believes that Black History Month is important. She says that “it is important as people get bullied for different religious or for the colour of their skin and Black History Month helps us to respect others.
Rocco, another year 7, handed in a project about Tiger Woods, another sporting legend. I certainly didn’t know that his original name was Eldrick Woods and his religion is Buddhist. Interestingly, Rocco commented that as a child he suffered with a stutter so he has faced many challenges in his life.
I was delighted to receive a second project from Rachel in year 8 and she really has gone the extra mile. I particularly enjoyed her research on the History of Black Hairstyles. It seems obviously, but the cornrows style was actually named because they looked similar to cornfields and the Rastafarian style dreadlocks was sign of the Youth Black Faith and was a visual sign of rebellion. Rachel showed in her project featured celebs celebrating the different Black hair styles. She then moved onto a montage of Black icons. Do take time to take a look at some of her project pages below.
