On the last day of half term, I had the pleasure of accompanying ‘Fused’ (our recent ‘battle of the band’s winners comprised of four year-9 musicians) to our closest neighbouring school ‘Meadow Wood’.
The band had made arrangements to appear as the live entertainment for a celebratory event to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee.
We arrived at the front door of the school with all of our equipment in tow on what turned out to be a beautiful, sunny Spring afternoon. We were then directed to a large outdoor area that had already been decorated with union flag bunting and a mixture of red, white, and blue balloons. There were cake/drink stalls and large groups of people gathered on picnic blankets, enjoying the festivities.
Once we had set up, the band was ready to begin and proceeded to treat the crowd to a mixture of popular songs and original material. From the get-go, it was clear that a few people were very appreciative of the live music and one particular student was up and dancing with a huge smile on their face.
By the time they had finished their set, ‘Fused’ had drawn a sizeable crowd and received a well-deserved round of applause and a heartfelt “thank you” from the event’s organisers.
For those that may not have knowledge of Meadow Wood school, the institution specialises in providing a highly individual curriculum for primary-age students who have physical and neurological impairments. To spend an afternoon there and see the wonderful work that they do is a touching and humbling experience and I was extremely proud of how our students conducted themselves for the entirety of their visit.
Not only did they (as they always do) perform with aplomb and professionalism, but they also represented the school in an exemplary manner through their polite and approachable personalities, engaging fully with all students, staff members, and visitors that presented themselves.
