Dyslexia Lunch Club (DLC) celebrates World...

This week we are celebrating 25 years of World Book Day and in the dyslexia lunch club we wanted to focus on the fact that World Book Day is not just for avid readers but is an opportunity for all students to discuss/recommend books that they have read and loved. In recognition of this, we also decided to introduce students to authors with dyslexia. For instance, did you know the following authors have dyslexia?

  • Dav Pilkey
  • Octavia Spencer
  • Agatha Christie
  • W.B Yeats
  • F Scott Fitzgerald
  • Henry Winkler
  • Ahmet Zappa
  • Carmen Agra Deedy
  • Jerry Pinkney

Mrs McDermott and I decided to showcase our great selection of dyslexia friendly books in the learning support department, this gave students a chance to explore different genres, find books they enjoy and discuss books with their peers.

A year 7 student recommended the dyslexia friendly book “What magic is this?” by Holly Bourne.

“I would recommend this book because normally teenage books are very big and I can’t read those types of books. This book is still for teenagers but is small and it has a really good storyline. I especially enjoyed the part where they thought all their magic they did was real!”

Below is a picture of all our students with their chosen books, ready to read them at home. Happy World Book Day everyone!
