PE and Health Faculty News

After the Christmas and New Year celebrations many of us have new year’s resolutions based around improving health and fitness. Despite the ongoing issues with covid the extra-curricular sports clubs will continue to take place and we look to welcoming as many students as possible into our lunchtime and after school sports clubs. Extra-curricular clubs will take place in basketball, gymnastics, fitness, table tennis, netball, trampolining as well as after school revision sessions for our sporting qualification courses. We also hope to resume competitive sports fixtures with this half term seeing a focus on basketball.

For full details of the clubs, fixtures and practices students and parents need to check on the Bushey Meads School website in the Calendar icon where you will find a full list of the extra-curricular activities. This is updated on a weekly basis to show the fixtures and practices for each week. In addition, students can check the notice boards in the boys and girls changing rooms and in the main PE lobby. The PE and Health Faculty also have their own Twitter account which includes regular updates on fixtures, match reports and details of forthcoming events.

The provisional programme for next week is:

All students who attend after school sports clubs will receive R2 Reward points every time they attend.

Students selected for teams will receive team sheets with start and finish times. Some clubs may change week by week depending on fixtures and meetings but parents should check the twitter account and the website for updates.

BASKETBALL

Y10 Boys v Grange Academy (District League) AWAY Mr Cartledge/Mr Symeou

Date: Tuesday 11th January 2022

Result: Lost 19-11

Scorers: T Qarib 9, H Wafi 2

Squad: T Qarib, B Fletcher-Gray, N Mitchell, A Khan, M Simmonds. H Wafi, R Puspasen

Commended performances: T Qarib, B Fletcher-Gray

Comment: The Year 10 basketball team put in an excellent hardworking performance in their first match for 2 years. Unfortunately, the boys were 3 players short due to player dropouts which made it very difficult for the boys in the later stages of the game. However, they started really well and some excellent defensive work by the whole team saw them take an early lead with Thomas Q very prominent on offence. With game tied 9-9 after three quarters unfortunately tiredness kicked in and late baskets for Grange saw the boys defeated. It was a really spirited effort by the boys in difficult circumstances and it gives them lots of positive hope for the future.

Y7 Boys v Grange Academy (District League) HOME Mr Harris

Date: Tuesday 11th January 2022

Result: Won 14 – 10

Scorers:

Squad: L Avci, E Henry, Z. O’Hara, G. Amoako-Wiredu, N. Walters, R. Rahman, F. Fowler, N. Konopka, H. Hayward, J. Cunningham, J. Parkes, B. Neulaender, H. McManus

Commended performances:

Comment: Tuesday night saw the Year 7s compete in their first basketball match vs Grange Academy. The boys started their game slowly conceding two early baskets after not contesting some rebounds. However, we soon got going and we fought back the score back to 4 – 4 midway through the first quarter and that’s how the first quarter ended. We made changes throughout the game to ensure all got game time throughout and 6 – 4 by the end of the second quarter. We fought well in the second quarter and were able to create more space across the court, which led to us creating a number of chances, all whilst not conceding any baskets of our own. A similar pattern ran into the final third quarter where we took the score to 12 – 4. In the final quarter, the game became more open and Grange Academy started to create more chances and ended up scoring a number of them. However, due to a strong showing from us when defending we were able to hold out and win the match with the final score being BMS 14 – 10 Grange Academy. Well done to all those involved, an excellent way to start your basketball season, many positives to build off for future games.

PE kit

It is essential that students have the full correct PE kit for all lessons. This includes shin pads and black /yellow socks when participating in football lessons and also a pair of white sports socks for all other activities. Students will be reminded when activities change. Students not bringing the correct kit will instantly receive consequence points. The picture below shows the shirts left over in the boys changing rooms before the Christmas break – in nearly all cases the kit is not labelled so we cannot return it to students. Students can come and check if they have lost their kit.

For any parental enquiries about any aspects of PE contact the Head of PE and Health Faculty Ashley Cartledge cartledgea@busheymeads.org.uk . For any specific issues related to Girls PE and girls’ fixtures contact Sarah Cooper coopers@busheymeads.org.uk.
