PE CONCEPT of the Week: FITNESS (Hands) Mr Cartledge

The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities.

This week in PE, we have been focusing on the importance of FITNESS and the need to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. At this time of year we all consider ways we can improve our lives and many of these involve adjustments to improve our mental physical health. The dangers of leading a sedentary lifestyle are well documented with the NHS recommending all 11-18 year olds participate in a minimum of 1 hour of physical activity a day to maintain a normal level of health. This week we have been reinforcing to students the many benefits to be gained from regular exercise including

  • Increased confidence and self esteem
  • Improved sleep
  • Increased energy levels
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved heart health and reduced risk of disease and illness.

Students in KS3 have started their healthy lifestyles units as we build up to the annual Health Week fitness checks in March. It is important to reinforce that all students in KS3 should be participating in 2 PE lessons a week and working hard in these lessons to boost their fitness levels. It has been great to see the boys working really hard in their basketball lessons and the girls in their football lessons this week. In addition many students continue to take up the many extra-curricular sporting opportunities available at Bushey Meads at both lunchtimes and after school. This can be found on the school website and these are updated on a weekly basis. ALL students are welcome to attend.

FOOTBALL

Year 7 v St Michaels (County Plate) AWAY  Mr Harris

Date: Tuesday 7th January 2025

Result: Won 2-1

Scorers: C. Killpack, F. Slazak

Squad: F. Murphy, R. Gurney, C. Killpack, B. Hemmings, N. Cunningham, J. Muraj, C. Vaughan, D. Hope, F. Slazak.

Commended performances: R. Gurney, F. Slazak

Comment: In tough conditions, we visited St Michael’s in the County Plate competition, where we started the game slowly we faced lots of pressure from St Michael’s, and we found ourselves having to do a lot of defending from the outset. Following this, we managed to get some more control in the game and started to create some chances. We managed to break through several times before half time and C. Killpack was the closest, where he had his goal ruled out for being offside just before half time. In the second half, we changed formation a bit and dominated more of the game, we managed to start creating chances and started shooting more. Eventually, C. Killpack got the breakthrough as the backpass to the goalkeeper held up in the longer grass, C. Killpack capitalised on this and curl it around the keeper making it 1 – 0 to Bushey Meads. Later in the game, F. Slazak came back onto the pitch and took a speculative shot from outside the box and went past the keeper and into the back of the net. 2 – 0. An extra cushion. We then moved into the final 6/7 minutes and lost concentration at the back, from a goal kick, gave the ball away and ended up conceding straight from that goal kick. This made for a tense final 5 minutes. But in the end, we managed to hold on despite one more scare and came away 2 – 1 victors.

PE kit

It is essential that students have the full correct PE kit for all lessons. This includes shinpads and black /yellow socks when participating in football lessons and also a pair of white sports socks for all other activities. Students will be reminded when activities change. Students not bringing the correct kit will instantly receive consequence points.

Girls should be wearing plain black shorts which are longer than the length of their PE shirt or hoody. Leggings should be black sports leggings and not see through.  Black tracksuit bottoms are also permitted.

ALL jewellery should be removed prior to the start of the lesson, including earrings, and hair should be tied up.
