PE and Health Faculty News: HEALTH WEEK

The week of March 28th to April was the school’s 10th annual whole school Health Week with all students in years 7-11 again completing their fitness testing. The aim of the week is to raise awareness about healthy lifestyles and for students to consider how their current lifestyle affects their own levels of fitness. With no recorded results for 2 years due to pandemic it was always going to be interesting to see how the last 2 years has affected the fitness of young people. The results of the testing will be available via the Learning Gateway after easter. The attitude of the students towards the testing was excellent with a real supportive environment in the sports hall. Well done to all those students who improved their score from the previous year. Top scores for each year group are shown below :

YEAR 7 R. Essafi/H. McManus 9.7 N Edirisuriya- 8.1

BHF Fun Run

On the last Friday of term over 1000 students took part in the annual Fun Run to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and the Ukranian refugee charities. As ever the students got into the spirit of the occasion with many running between 5 and 10 laps of the course. The school raised over £1000 for charity and it was great to see so many students working hard to boost their physical fitness whilst raising money for some really worthwhile charities. Any students who have still not made their donation can still donate this week via scopay.

 INTER HOUSE BASKETBALL

YEAR 9 IH BASKETBALL   Mr Burnell / Mr James

Date : Mon 28th March 2022

Winners : Beech/Elm

Squad : K. Ford, J. Charles, P. Nicolaou, S. Harries, M. Kabucho

Comment : It was fantastic to see so many year 9 students take part in such a successful inter-house competition before the easter break. The tournament was played in excellent spirits with some very good skill being showcased throughout. The leaderboard was very tight all the way through the tournament as all teams were picking up points on a regular basis. The tournament had to be decided with a playoff match as two teams were tied at the end of the league stage. The final was again a very tight contest as both teams were evenly matched. The final resulted in Beech and Elm winning by a single basket. A big thank you to all sports leaders who helped the tournament run well.

YEAR 8 IH BASKETBALL     Mr Cartledge

Date : Thurs 30th March 2022

Winners : Combined Elm/Sycamore/Oak

Squad : J Gladdy, A Worth, L Aravindan, E Ansa Otu, K Pamplona

Comment : It was great to see 30 year 8 boys involved in a fiercely contested tournament with lots of close matches. All CDC groups were represented with Elm/Sycamore and Oak combining to make a team and Beech, Willow, Maple and Ash all fielding their own teams. After the round robin group stages Ash met Beech in the 3rd/4th place play-off with Ash coming out on top. The final saw Willow play-off against the combined team with the combined team recording a narrow win. There was an excellent atmosphere to round off a great term of year 8 sport. Special thanks also to L Fiordelisi, N Haines and A Law from the Year 11 Level 1 sports leadership team who all helped to officiate the tournament. Well done boys !

YEAR 7 IH BASKETBALL     Mr Harris/Mr James

Date : Thurs 30th March 2022

Winners : Ash

Squad : H. McManus, J. Cunningham, L. Avci, H. Wills.

Comment : Wednesday evening saw 26 Year 7 students come along to take part in the Inter house Basketball tournament. Unfortunately, not all CDCs were able to field a full team so therefore we combined some teams in order to allow all students who came along to play some basketball. We had four teams in the end: Maple/Oak, Elm, Sycamore/Beech & Ash. Students worked incredibly well throughout this tough competition, most of the scores from each game were separated by only one or two points. All students were excellent and worked hard playing full court basketball and the competition was played in good spirits. Well to Ash for winning and well done to all students for coming down and showing commitment to taking part in after school sports. Excellent effort.

FINAL OVERALL SCORES :

POSITION YEAR 7 YEAR 8 YEAR 9

2nd Elm Willow Ash
3rd Maple/Oak Ash Willow
4th Sycamore/Beech Beech Oak

BASKETBALL

Y7 Boys v WESTFIELD  Mr Harris

Date : Tuesday 29th March 2022

Results : Lost 28 – 24

Squad : L. Avci, N. Konopka, H. Hayward, J. Cunningham, J. Parkes, B. Neulaender, K. Banfield, H.  McManus, C. Pearce, Z. Woolf, H. Wills, K. Gibson.

Commended performances : B. Neulaender.

Comment: Our final game of the season saw Westfield visit Bushey Meads. We haven’t played basketball for a while, but straight into the game the students got straight back to where they left off last time. The game had a cagey start, we took an early lead with a couple of points, taking the score to 4 – 0. Soon after that they managed to get themselves on the board taking the game to 4 – 2. Towards the end of the first quarter we managed to score again to bring the score to 6 – 2 at the end of the first. We had a four point lead going into the second and students were excited to get back at it. We started well with N. Konopka got a couple of baskets in this quarter, we also lost some of our defensive prowess from the first quarter and started to lose some points ourselves. We found the score at 10 – 6 at half time, a narrow lead. In the 3rd quarter we showed our dominance and scored many lay ups with J. Cunningham scored a deep 2 pointer during this quarter and B. Neulaender scored a number of baskets. At the end of the 3rd quarter we were winning 22 – 10. A dominant lead going into the final quarter and we unfortunately had some complacency slip into the team. We were confident at the start but soon after the Westfield player started to dominate and our defence couldn’t stop him. Despite the best efforts from the team, the game finished 28 – 24 to Westfield. A real shame to finish the season on a disappointing result, especially after a positive first basketball season together. However, all the boys applied themselves well in this game and gave 100% effort throughout even when we were not winning. This is an opportunity for us to continue to learn and build upon what we have done this year and take it into next season!

TRAMPOLINING COMPETITION – Miss K Booth

Date : Wednesday 30th March 2022

Competing Schools : Bushey Meads, Immanuel College, The Grange Academy

Level 1Squad : Rosie Stevens, Ellen McDermott, Millie Andronicou, Katie Andrews, Omaya Arachchilage, Aoife McGrath, Charlotte Hodge, Jazmine Neighbour-Owen, Emma Ocsai

Level 2Squad : Layla Bateman, Annabel Pointer, Gemma Goldstein, Leona Dene, Chloe Limb, Retaj Neel

Level 3Squad : Ava McInnes, Nieka Hamisi, Aeron Lightfoot

Comment:

It was fantastic to see 18 girls from across all year groups compete in a trampoline competition against Immanuel College and The Grange Academy. The girls have worked incredibly hard over several weeks to learn new skills and perfect their routines and it definitely paid off on the day. The girls performed very well despite the pressure of having their routines judged and performing in front of a large audience- most of them for the first time. BMS dominated the podium in the Level 1 competition with Rosie Stevens placing 1st, Charlotte Hodge 2nd and Millie Andronicou 3rd. In the Level 2 competition Annabel Pointer placed 2nd and Ava McInnes came in a respectable 2nd place in the challenging Level 3 competition.
