PE CONCEPT of the Week: Competence (HANDS) Mrs Cartledge
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT
Competence is a cornerstone of physical education, encompassing the ability to apply a combination of skills, techniques, and understanding effectively in varied contexts. In PE lessons, competence means not only acquiring technical skills but also demonstrating confidence, creativity, and control in movement. It is through this lens that Year 8 students have been approaching their apparatus sequences, blending their developing abilities with a focus on refinement and performance.
Over the past few weeks, Year 8 girls have shown remarkable progress in crafting and performing their apparatus sequences. These lessons have challenged students to integrate key elements such as balance, coordination, and transitions into cohesive routines. Through guided practice, peer feedback, and iterative improvements, they have begun to demonstrate a deeper understanding of how to combine movements into sequences that reflect both skill and creativity. Many students have shown growing confidence in performing in front of their peers, showcasing not only physical skill but also resilience and a positive attitude toward challenges.
This unit has also emphasized the importance of collaboration and self-assessment. Students have worked in small groups to refine their routines, exchanging constructive feedback and drawing inspiration from each other. As we continue to build on these foundational skills, we are proud of the progress Year 8 girls have made and look forward to their continued growth in competence and confidence in future lessons.

Comment : The annual District Development 5-a-side festival saw us enter 3 teams with over 21 boys involved. It was great to see the team captains taking on leadership responsibility in organising the teams in a very competitive event. After the Round Robin fixtures the BMS B squad qualified for the Final v Futures Academy and after a 10 minute game the teams were tied at 5-5. Despite dominating in extra-time the boys were very unlucky to finally lose 7-6. It was a great tournament with all the boys working extremely hard. Special mention to N Gibson who was the Player of the Tournament.
Year 9 Boys v Reach Free (District League) AWAY Mr O’Kelly
Date: Tuesday 28th January 2025
Result: Won 3 – 0
Scorers: D. Snowden 2, R. Doran
Squad: E. Godfrey, A. Chaudhry, R. Hodgson, F. Gee, R. Durant, O. Harris, J. Lewis, R. Doran, B. Spencer, K. Mistry, D. Snowden, A. Shinkwin
Commended performances: B. Spencer and R. Durant
Comment: A very assured victory against a team that has really tested the boys in previous years. Right from the first few moments of the game, BMS were able to win and keep possession of the ball and threaten the opposition almost at will. With the opposition having to rely on set pieces or long range shots for chances, the team were comfortable in leading at halftime 2-0 and added a third early in the second half.
BASKETBALL
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Year 7 (District Tournament) @Queens Miss Sunpongco
Date: Monday 27th January 2025
Results: Won 1, Lost 2
Squad: E. Coetzee, E. Jacks, A. Kumah, Z. Loison, F. Sheward, E. Wurr, J. Depasquale and E. Hill
Comment: The Year 7s were very excited to play their basketball game as a team. The girls displayed fantastic effort and determination in their first basketball tournament. Despite two early losses against Queens and Croxley Danes, they showed great improvement, securing a well-deserved win against St Michaels. With very little experience, the improvements made over the course of the afternoon was great to see. Finishing with a 8-0 win! Well done girls!
