Science Week 2023!
Science Week was a huge success at Bushey Meads School! We had a wide range of events and activities, all of which were enjoyed by students of all ages.
One of the most popular events was the rat dissection that took place at lunchtime. This was a great opportunity for students to learn about the biology of a rat and to see how its body works. The dissection was led by Mr Ellis, one of our excellent science technicians, and some of our fantastic Year 13 biology students volunteered to help demonstrate the anatomy of a rat to keen younger students.  Students were able to ask questions and learn more about biology.
Another popular event was the exciting chemistry demonstrations. Mr Charmokly, our Head of Chemistry, showed students some of the amazing things that chemistry can do. These included the thermite reaction and the ‘screaming jelly baby’ demonstration, which is always a hit with students. The demo involves dissolving a jelly baby in a strong oxidising agent, which makes a loud noise, as the large amount of energy contained within a single jelly baby is released. Students were fascinated by the demonstrations and learned a lot about chemical reactions.
We also had a popular periodic table treasure hunt, which took place over the whole week. This was a great way for students to learn about the elements on the periodic table. Students had to find posters of different elements hidden around the school, then research interesting facts about the element, and were rewarded with prizes for their hard work!
Overall, Science Week was a great success at Bushey Meads. Students learned a lot about science and had a lot of fun. We are already looking forward to next year’s Science Week.
We would like to thank all the teachers, support staff and students who helped to make Science Week a success!
