LEADERSHIP in PE
The week before half term saw the school consider the importance of Leadership for the weekly Theme of the Week. Leadership in PE is a very important aspect of the subject right from Year 7 up to Year 13. All students are encouraged to take on responsibility for sections of lessons including warm-ups, leading skills drills, officiating as well as the many students that take on the responsibility of being captains for our many school teams. KS4 and KS5 PE qualification courses both include leadership units and we continue to have many students qualify with the Level 1 Sports Leaders qualification.
YEAR 12 CTECH Coaching sessions
This year’s Year 12 cohort of CTEC Sport students has been the largest we have had since the course began with 19 students following the course. As part of Unit 2 Sports Coaching and Activity Leadership all of the group had to deliver 6 x coaching sessions to groups of students. It has been fantastic to see the students develop their planning, organisation and communication skills with sessions delivered in football, basketball, rugby, gymnastics and volleyball. The group have been excellent role models for our younger students who have really enjoyed the sessions. The CTEC students are now in the process of evaluating their strengths and weaknesses as they strive to complete all the unit assignments.
YEAR 11 CNAT Coaching sessions
The Year 11 CNAT Sports Studies cohort all had to plan, deliver and evaluate a 40 minute coaching session for a group of KS3 students in a sport of their choice. Here they have had to consider the importance and safety and risk assessment as well as the structure and methods of delivering effective coaching sessions. The boys have really applied themselves with some fantastic sessions being delivered and some really positive grades being awarded.
New Year 10 Sports Leaders group
For many years we have been delivering the Level 1 Sports Leadership qualification to selected KS4 students. Our most recent Year 11 group have this week been collecting their certificates for successfully completing the course which has involved completing a series of training sessions as well as helping out at a series of events across the Trust including Hartsbourne Sports Day, Primary School basketball festivals, BMS Sports day and BMS Inter House Cross Country marshalling. Well done done to Ayaan C, Amy D, Lleyton F, Kaylan F, Noah H, Louis H, Alex L, Bailey N, Aidan O’S, Goncalo S, David T, Keely W and Megan W.
The new Year 10 group have recently started their training and have already completed sessions on leadership skills and behaviours as well as the importance of verbal and non verbal communication. We look forward to seeing their progress over the next few months.
Herts Young Coaches
In addition to the above qualifications a selected group of year 9/10 students have been taking part, since November, in a Hertfordshire Young Coaches Program. The initiative was designed to get more females involved in sports coaching and it’s certainly been very successful with our students.
In the winter term E.Cloote and L.Slight (yr 10) supported, with great success, the Wednesday extra-curricular netball club at Little Redding’s Primary School. They have continued to assist with this along with a new group of young coaches (yr9): E.Hauff, N.Donald, L.Krikler, S.Mullings, P.Pryra and I.Payne.
At Hartsbourne Primary School, E.Rogers, J.Verrey and E.Williams (yr9) have been instrumental, this term, in setting up and delivering netball sessions to the students at their Thursday after school club. It has been lovely to hear of the commitment and enthusiasm the students have taken to the primary schools, and the professional way they have planned and delivered their sessions. Another great example of leadership being displayed by our students.

Comment: What a difference a week makes… the year 9 rounders team really stepped up their game play to secure a deserved victory over local rivals The Grange. A close first innings saw the scores evenly matched with mistakes in both teams fielding being the major negative. After a brief reshuffle and team talk the BMS girls worked hard to eradicate their fielding errors and maintained the pressure with the bat to win the second innings and the overall game. Both teams played with real enthusiasm and whilst competitive it was a lovely friendly evening of rounders.
Well played ladies.
