Languages Enrichment

Showing that they have a plethora of skills year 9 participated in an enrichment day around learning languages. Learning a language has been seen to have multiple benefits beyond that of increasing employment opportunities for instance research has found that multilinguals are better at problem solving, more creative and are better multitaskers than those speaking one language. Engaging in a variety of activities including cooking, art, music and dance year 9 students learnt how to be creative in their learning of another language. In cooking students were making madeleines. Madeleines being small French cakes in the shape of shells dating back to the 18th Century. Getting students to flex their muscles with the whisking together of eggs and sugar they produced a range of tasty treats. A similar display of physical activity was evident in dance as the warm-up of planks became dancing the Can Can. A lively dance of French origin, that is known for its high kicks and dates back to Parisian dance halls in the 1830s. Meanwhile, the language department had transformed classrooms into shops and had students completing the everyday activity of shopping for specific items. Walking into music saw a range of different talents being displayed as students reading and playing music from French scoresheets not only building cross-curricular skills but also their confidence when presenting work to peers.
