Science Faculty at Bushey Meads School

On Tuesday of last week I had an excellent learning walk through our Science Faculty at Bushey Meads School and was very impressed with the learning that was taking place and excellent progress being made.

It was great to see Year 7 students so engaged in learning about tissues in biology with Miss Ali and see them answering and also asking so many great questions. The lesson had a very calm atmosphere for learning and all students were demonstrating the Keys to Success and very good attitudes to learning. It was impressive to see. In another Year 7 class I visited there was a really focussed start to the lesson, all students were completing the starter activity task in their books and responding to a question on the interactive whiteboard; behaviour for learning was exemplary.
In Ms Karunthilake’s Year 10 class students were again focussed and working well learning about dependent and controlled variables and the importance of these in scientific study and research. Students were being encouraged to think deeply and were responding effectively to a variety of questions being asked by the teacher. Engagement was high and good progress was being made. Year 10 students were also working well in Miss Roberts science class learning about how molecules combine to make different structures and compounds. These high attitudes to learning were being replicated in Mr Tahir’s class where the students were engaged in a practical activity exploring resistance in electrical circuits. Year 10 students in Mrs Ram’s class were studying about elements and moles, copying key information into their books from the board and answering questions posed by the teacher to demonstrate and deepen their understanding. It was an excellent lesson at the end of an impressive walk through our science faculty.

In the Year 11 physics lesson students were making an excellent start to the lesson and were completing a past paper question linked to the starter activity, practising their exam technique and demonstrating prior knowledge through written questioning. A self assessment was due to follow. In a Year 11 biology lesson, another excellent start to the learning was evident; all students were engaged in a clear do now activity and work in their books was well presented. In a Year 11 chemistry class students were studying molecular structures and had recently completed a peer assessment activity to identify strengths and next steps. Clear routines had been established, behaviour for learning was exemplary and great progress was being made by all students.
In a Year 13 Biology A level lesson the teacher was using highly effective questioning to tease out student understanding and take the learning to the next level through additional stretch and challenge questions. High engagement and demonstration of knowledge was very evident in this class.
Congratulations to all students for their excellent attitudes to learning, high engagement and effort and of course to our very hard working science teachers.
