Outstanding Teaching and Learning
We have a number of outstanding teachers at Bushey Meads School and it was a real privilege to watch one of those in action on Friday afternoon last week. Mr Abusef was teaching his Year 12 IT class and the lesson started extremely promptly and all students engaged with a ‘Do Now’ activity to introduce the lesson.
Mr Abusef then went through the topic to be studied using effective questioning to engage all students in thinking deeply about their learning, recapping on what they knew and challenging them to make progress in their understanding. He bounced the learning around the room to deepen knowledge using student experts as appropriate. His slides on the interactive whiteboard were inspiring and supported links to the real world and future careers linked to the topic being studied.
Tasks had been carefully crafted for the students to complete on the Google Classroom, and as they finished the tasks they were invited to discuss their work with him and answer questions to take their learning to the next level. Live marking in green pen was then responded to in purple pen and all completed work stored carefully in the student folders. Students had access to all the resources they needed to make outstanding progress. They worked hard and the pace of learning and achievement throughout the lesson was extremely high.
Student experts were used effectively to provide peer feedback and by the end of the lesson all students had achieved a great amount of work to support them in their preparation for the upcoming IT exam unit.
The whole learning experience and overall lesson can only be described as ‘poetry in motion’; it was really impressive to see how much could be achieved with the help, support and guidance of such an outstanding teacher.
