On Monday 14th October, Assistant Headteacher of Prospect School, Mr Gerrard, accompanied by six of his student leaders, travelled all the way from Reading, to learn all about how we set up and deliver student leadership and student voice at Bushey Meads School.Head boy, Benjamin Garret and Executive Student Leader, T-Ala Marsh, accompanied me in a conference style meeting in which we walked our guests through the BMS Student Leadership website, different roles, different activities and systems. Ben, who has been a student leader since Year 7 in varying roles, was brilliant at explaining the journey we have been on in terms of taking student leadership and the impact of student voice to the exemplary level it is today.

T-Ala was fantastic at explaining her own story of not really being the role model student in younger years and then once assuming a student leadership role, seeing her character positively transform and grow thanks to the opportunities and responsibility that came with the role. The Prospect School student leaders and Mr Gerrard, who are just at the start of their Student Leadership journey, had many questions to ask and were provided with extremely useful answers and ideas to help them achieve their goals even better. They could see how much the student voice is listened to and valued and how this has inspired many developments and improvements around the school.

Whilst our guests were blown away by our Student Leadership systems, they were even more impressed by seeing everything we talked about in action during a tour of the school. They spoke about the great calmness, politeness of students, amazing displays in corridors and classrooms and generally a wonderful learning atmosphere. The part of the tour that impressed them the most was the Student Learning Consultants who jumped out of their seats to welcome our guests to their classroom and explained what they were learning and what activities they were engaged in.
