Year 11 chemistry students recently completed a practical exercise involving identifying an unknown substance using tests for positive and negative ions.

Students observed unique flame colours during the flame tests, which helped them determine the metal ions present. They then performed a series of chemical reactions, such as adding silver nitrate to detect halide ions or barium chloride to identify sulfate ions. They carefully recorded any precipitates formed, their colours, and other noticeable changes.
The practical gave students valuable hands-on experience and a better understanding of how chemistry solves real-world problems.
