Promoting and Encouraging Growth Mindsets at...
This week’s main school assemblies were led by Deputy Headteacher Mr Beswick and focussed on a really important aspect of achievement – that of developing a powerful growth mindset. Mr Beswick explained that, in a nutshell, a growth mindset is the belief that your ability and intelligence can grow with effort, learning and perseverance. This is at the heart of our school.
A fixed mindset says “I can’t do it” a growth modest says “I can’t do it YET”
A fixed mindset says “I want to avoid mistakes” a growth mindset says “Mistakes help me learn.”
Being in classrooms each and every day provides the opportunities for all our learners to develop and grow, so being here at school each and every day is key. Mr Beswick shared some data with the students clearly showing this and also reminded them of the prize draw taking place at the end of term to provide an opportunity to reward students for having very good attendance.
As parents and carers do remind your children that students who have 95% or more attendance achieve far better GCSE and A level grades and, when coupled with a genuine growth mindset, real success is within your grasp, as shown by many of our top performers, year on year.
Mr Beswick ended the assembly with four top tips to develop a growth mindset:
  1. Embrace challenges.
  2. Focus on effort not results.
  3. Learn from feedback.
  4. Celebrate progress!
